What would you offer ?
Im looking at this set in Vancouver .
The seller claims to have paid $ 250 for it several years back , but is not looking for that much . I was considering offering $125 tops . It looks a bit beat up . Your suggestions ? http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/ele/1231371142.html http://images.craigslist.org/3k23m43...a2a3fd188b.jpg |
I paid $9 for one at the ETF convention this year.
Personally, I would not pay over $25, but others might.............. |
When I want something I pay what is needed to get it. Under $100.00 would be my goal. Good luck!
|
I'd pass.
That Set is worth, maybe, 50 bucks. ...or, it would get tossed. I'd buy it as a parts set, only. It's too rough, cosmetically. LJB:smoke: |
I wouldn't go over $50 either unless I knew the CRT was good.
That model has a cloth grille that covers the entire front of the set, it looks pretty ratty on that one. |
Hate to do this to the seller, but I think they're dreaming if they are going to get much above fifty bucks for that....
|
Please do not give them over $50.00.
But first check the CRT!!!! |
50 bucks is what I was thinking .
Looks pretty ratty . I asked for some better pics , I'll post them up if he sends them .... |
Fair Radio in Lima Oh. has one that last time I looked had a nice cabinet. If you would like I can see about pics and price.

According to RCA they weigh 93 pounds . Shipping from Vancouver for this one might be bad enough . Too bad I couldn't just go pick it up , but there is 2 ferries between me and vancouver , that kills about 250 bucks to get there and back . |
Keep it under fifty, if not for the fact that these sets have a TON of caps in them. You'll easily spend over a hundred bucks to recap it as it is anyway. Not to mention new tubes, etc. The safety glass looks cracked, too. You can do much better for the money you're considering offering. I think just about any B&W tube tv could be had for that price.

$50 is very generous, if you're concerned about the resale value. It's probably a $40 set. Those sets aren't super-collectible, and they're fairly common. That's the last 10" RCA; 1950. I'd pass on it at $35, personally.
But the flip side is, if you like the set, and it's worth it to you, go for it! I consider what I like before I consider the price. If I pay a high price for a TV that I like, I'm happy. I don't buy for an investment, and don't care what it's worth to others. Charles |
I'd say $35. Personally, I'm not big on sets with metal cabinets.
|
Also, if that's the one with the faux woodgrain finish, it's devilishly hard to touch up, so make sure it's in good shape. And the cloth is frequently damaged and also difficult to work with. Refinishing a wood-cased set is, in my opinion, a lot easier. So if both those cosmetic items are good, I'd go for it ($25-50; more if you really have the hots for it) but if it's not in good shape, I'd pass, be patient and know that something better will come along. 10BP4s are starting to get a little pricey lately too, so knowing the CRT is good will make it a lot better deal than if you need to also buy a replacement!

50 would be pushing the limit .
So is this a metal cabinet under a faux woodgrain finish ? Here's some more pics : |

Incidently, my first vintage TV was an RCA 9T246. It was in much better shape than this, but the front glass was cracked. Learned a lot from that set. It's actually a fairly "service-friendly" TV compared with some of the other 40's RCA sets (such as the 630-type sets), since the CRT is strapped to the chassis and there's plenty of room under the chassis to work. The only 'trick' is that you have to reach in to unplug the speaker (and then unbolt the speaker from the cabinet so you can reconnect it while the chassis is outside the cabinet). Oh, by the way, I suppose these days one should probably be warned that this particular model has a big sheet of asbestos lining the inside of the cabinet top, as well as a smaller sheet on at least one side of the cabinet. Should be OK as long as you take care not to disturb it, so try to avoid scraping the chassis or other hardware against the asbestos sheets when you remove/install the chassis. As other people have said, $50 would be about maximum for this set in that condition. I actually found a T100 at a garage sale a couple of years ago in similar condition to this TV (including the frayed speaker grille cloth), and I paid-- $0. Yes, *free*. So, I couldn't complain there... |
So , I offered 50 bucks and more or less got told to get lost .
He said he would go for it pick up only but to ship it he would want more . Im not going to both with it . I found out it was going to cost about $ 70 to ship . Actually I'd rather have a set like a VT-71 or a 7" admiral . |
I had a T100 given to me back around '90-'91. Several years ago, I gave it to someone else. And, I've seen several at different places over the years in better shape than the one in question here. So, if the seller is not interested in the $50; then, it's his loss. I'm sure one that's in better shape will turn up one day.

Some years back I spotted one of these in a used furniture store marked "not for sale". At the time I hadn't seen many 10" sets at all and thought it must be a 621 or 630. I really didn't know. It was in similiar condition to this one. I did try and talk the guy into selling it but he was serious about keeping the set. Years later I went back and it was gone. Oh, at the time I would have handed him a hundred dollar bill in a heartbeat, but today I wouldn't pay more than $35. Now, if you didn't have an early set, and were having trouble finding one locally, and could pick it up easily...
