Oh Bob, you need this one...
|
LOL Yeah, I've seen that one has been kicking around on craigslist a couple times.
It's only a few miles from me and the price is fine, but I just don't have the space for it. Or vehicle to haul it in for that matter. Maybe I'll arrange a visit with the seller and take a look at it just for kicks. It's also tempting to get it just for parts, but I don't have the heart to scrap it. There's a sweet blond Admiral in NY too. Looks like the big brother of my 10" blonde 30A16. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=180587760255 |
Don't you dare scrap it! Not having room has never stopped me before and I've always wanted a triple threat- er, thrill.
|
Don't you have a couch you could throw out or something? :D
This set is three times more thrilling than your other sets after all. |
I'm not sure it would even fit though my old doors. A GE 802 just barely made it in.
Don't worry, I'd never scrap a set. I am a little worried it might get tossed by the owner though. They tried selling it for about a year on craigslist without success. |
"Bob....BOOOOOOOB....Bob, PLEASE come 'n' get me...I wanna come 'n' live w/YOU now...You KNOW you want me....I'm not THAT big.... C'mon, Bob ! This Nasswhole is gonna make me into Kindling if somebody don't come 'n' Rescue me...I gots a GOOD CRT 'n' Everything....PLEASE, Bob....."
|
Yeah, yeah. I'd have to borrow a truck and rent a storage locker to put it in. I just can't do it :(
|
Heheheh you guys crack me up :)

This is like an family intervention sitdown for a heroin addict.
You can't save 'em all, Bob. That's what I keep telling myself. Oooooh. That Andrea TVK-12 is whispering my name...:smoke: |
Buy it...buy it...

Lo these many months later, this set still hasn't found a home - not even for free. Worse yet, the building it's in is being demolished in a few days.
So I'm heading over to check it out tomorrow. I can't promise I'll save the whole set, but I'll at least scavenge what I can before it's smashed :( |

C'mon Bob, all the cool kids are doing it, even I have a locker now:thmbsp: |
That's be nice, but I can barely afford my rent these days :(
It's just as well, the set wasn't in the greatest shape. I suspect it had been down in that basement for decades. I spent about an hour on my hands and knees in filth with just a mag light to guide me as I dismantled the set. The instant I got home I hopped right in the shower :yuck: Here what I managed to salvage. It's a 30A1S chassis which is what I have in three other unrestored sets so I'm sure it'll come in handy. I also have the radio chassis & bezel, speaker, safety glass and grille cloth. It's still out in the garage and so I haven't tested the CRT yet. The seller said he plugged it in and got the radio to work, but not the TV. Hard to believe that since just about every tube is gone  http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6090/...4ab4c640_b.jpg |
I still have the rest of that chassis for you if you want it, I'll drop it on your porch next time I drive by. :D
|
I don't have any sets that use that chassis, but if no one else needs it, sure I'll take it.
I brought the TV chassis inside for a closer look. Some of the power resistors and one or two caps have been replaced, but the rest looks stock. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6076/...18368e23_z.jpg Nice, original warning labels. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6186/...e45d25c4_z.jpg Flyback appears to be OK. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6087/...499a1996_z.jpg RCA CRT had good emissions within seconds and the life test is rock solid  Quite possibly the best used 10BP4 I've come across so far. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6181/...954a31f2_z.jpg Assuming I didn't pick up the hantavirus in that basement, I'd say it was worthwhile :) |
I see that chassis has a Standard Coil tuner. Is it a split channel audio? I see it uses a leaded tube shield on the 6J6. All the early models I've seen had a radio that was powered by the tv power supply. At least it has that coveted HV cage cover.
|
Yes, it's split audio. I would have thought the radio would be powered from the TV supply, but it has it's own transformer.
|
I took a closer look at the radio and was surprised to discover that it's completely self contained. It even has it's own power cord and 6V6 output amp. I really expected it to share some components with the TV especially the separate power and amp chassis.
http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6184/...212c2b7e_z.jpg http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6082/...45fa928d_z.jpg That big cap is a replacement for the one mounted on top of the chassis. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6087/...bb68461c_z.jpg The control layout is a little goofy. OFF-ON-TONE, FM-BC-PW, VOLUME I wonder what the PW band position does ? http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6185/...7b70a442_z.jpg If I had the tools and skills I could make a customer cabinet for it :) |
The PW may be PH, and it would be for Phono, whether built-in (on some models) or with an external input jack.
|
Ah, of course it is :o. It's so dirty I couldn't make it out properly.
