All it takes is one person with money then we are the idiots. $1500 is nothing to someone decorating a 'retro' room in their mansion for a functional period piece.

I'm not sure if $1000 would seperate me from my CTC-5. I like it! So, maybe he really likes these sets.

I paid $35 for my CT-5. For 1K, I don't think so. Nobody wanted any of the sets Damen and I bought. They all would of ended up in the landfill.

BTW, the CRT is original. Dated 1956 and is the ALL glass type and is good.

All CRT's have a glass front, but if yours is original it's a 21AXP22 with the metal funnel. I don't think the all glass ones (beginning with 21CYP22) came out till 1957, that's what my CTC-7 has.

I know crt's have a glass front unless they are made from a clear metal nobody knows about. I looked this set over very well. The CRT is all glass but is dated nov 56. maybe it was replaced early on or is a very late production set. I could not find the tube number yet. It's mounted exactly like my 59 ctc-9 not like others I've seen with the glass/metal crt. Hey I could be wrong. Look at the pics and you tell me.

The CRT appears to be a 21CYP22 because of the striping on the glass bell. Bet it has the dual anode button under that shield connected by a 2-watt resistor and spring.

BTW, I live in Baltimore and will NOT be contacting this seller ;)

That ad has been up for a while now, at least a month. You'd think if you were trying to make a couple thousand dollars you could be bothered to take a photograph.

CTC-5's never came with all glass tubes from the factory so far as I know, so someone retrofitted it with a 21CYP22. That tube would be '57 or later.

The CTC-5 in the photo, with the 21CYP22 includes RCA's glass to metal conversion kit which included (among other things) a later style yoke cover to secure the yoke to the tube's neck. The 21CYP22's date code is an indicator that that CRT started life as a factory installed CRT in some RCA chassis, probably an early CTC-7. In the 55 years since its 1956 date code, who knows where it's been?

The funny thing is it has the serial number sticker on the crt that matches the tv serial number. It the crt was replaced they would not more than likely of transferred it over to the new crt. The HOT is dated late 1956 also, I read that a lot of the CTC-5's sold well into 1957 as left over 56 models. The cabinet model is definitely 1956 but maybe this was built in 1957. Who knows. This may just an oddball set thrown together with the parts they had including the new 21cyp22 that was out in the CTC-7 or it was a replacement very very early on still under warranty. It does not make much difference to me as long as I get it to work. We will never know the truth about this set

If there's a serial number tag on the 21CYP22 that matches the CTC-5's serial number tag, then I'd say it's a late CTC-5 chassis that came equipped with the all-glass tube.
I never heard of one that did, but that certainly doesn't mean that it never happened. Very interesting.

Looks like there was quite a bit of 5/7 overlap. I wonder if Ed has any documentation on the 21CYP in a 5?

Not sure what's up with that CTC-5 w/the glass tube. Maybe a prototype for the conversion kit? I believe RCA carried CTC-5 models into the next model year simply because they had so many CTC-5 models left unsold. My late 1957 RCA sales brochure shows both CTC-5 & Mark Series CTC-7 models. I doubt they had CTC-5 & 7 production lines running at the same time. As for the high prices of those
Craig's List sets, I figure the seller will be willing to accept a lower price and the buyer will think he's getting a bargin. Good sales ploy.

These tvs are only getting rarer, especially the crts in good shape. We should not be belittling someone trying to sell their sets. This hobby has no popularity at all. whenever I tell someone I collect old tvs, they say, oh yeah, nice.

this person knows the future value of these sets. The set in my avatar I got 10 to 12 years ago. The CTC4 then was just an outdated dog then since the only popular color sets then were the 15".

An ocassional set may pop out of the woodwork, don't expect 50's color to show up everyday or even every week. Most of the original owners are at the age where they pass away or already went to nursing homes. Sets are nearly antique age.

If possible, join us in Columbus, Oh. at the ETF Convention in late April or early May next year. You'll see all the 50's era color sets you can handle and then some. Failing that, is there anyone in the Austin, Tx, area with a 50's color set that can invite Andy over for a visit?

Actually this is another thread like the one titled "What everyone here will need one day" and you click on it with completely different expectations....... At first I was really wondering......... if you guys got high on other stuff than melting solder, or sizzling flyback transformers.......... fizzing selenium rectifiers............ or overcooked yolks....... but then I guess that's just me............

I 100% agree. I hate seeing overpriced sets as much as anyone else but there is a positive. As long as people think old sets are worth a good amount of money it will save a lot of sets from going to the dump or getting fish tanked ect..
