My God my back is sore!

Got an odd call yesterday from a friend about a TV stash, an estate of a former repairman.

There must have been at least 30 consoles, I kid you not. Table models, probably around the same amount. I guess he'd sold about 15 table model 50s B&W sets before I got there, to a local collector.

Came home with a few treasures, a pair of RCA CTC-36 portables in great shape, a GE VIR 19" set, a Philco 23" b/w console, a Portacolor, and an RCA CTC-25 console. Plugged in one of the CTC-36 portables for the heck of it, and she came right up :D

There's a CTC-4 "Director", and a CTC-11 still there, both missing the chassis, but I believe I found the chassis to the 4 in the garage. Both cabinets are in respectable shape. He was asking $100-$150 each for them, but I passed for now. Also spotted a nice Admiral 19A12. Of the other rectangular tube sets there, he also had 3 or 4 Quasar tube consoles, a couple Zeniths (late 60s I'd guess), a Curtis Mathes, and a couple others. Some were solid state as well.

Post yer "wish lists now".....but you gotta pick them up at my place ;) . I'll post pics when I can, my back is friggin KILLING me! :)

Penthode 04-03-2012 10:14 PM

I might be interested in the 4. How complete is it? And what is the state of the cabinet?

Your mentioning of the 4 chassis separate from the cabinet suggests there are other bits and pieces. Are there parts for old sets available?

Cheers,

Terry

If there was a separate 21AXP22 CRT, I need one for my '57 Muntz 721CV. Mine has open filaments.

Kamakiri 04-04-2012 05:53 AM

The CTC4 cabinet is complete with the picture tube. The cabinet looks darn good, honestly. I "think" the lower grille script might not have been complete, I couldn't really tell as it was in a dark corner and I was working with a flashlight, but otherwise it looked great. It's been sitting in a dry basement since, my guess, at the very least the Nixon administration. There's no separate picture tubes there, just the two in the cabinets.

Parts? My God, yes. TONS of parts, tubes, and such in boxes. The one part that I really wanted though, a convergence board for my 1971 Zenith, none sighted.

DaveWM 04-04-2012 07:51 AM

Flybacks?, looking for a fly for a CTC-5

Kamakiri 04-04-2012 08:00 AM

I didn't see NOS anything except tubes and some resistors. There might be one there, but searching for it there is akin to a needle in a proverbial haystack, and even if I found it, I can't verify it's any good.

Still, if I do go back (which I probably will), I'd be willing to look for one, you just need to give me stamp markings on the piece and a picture of it would help as well....

Sandy G 04-04-2012 08:33 AM

Tim, I would laugh at you about the back-But I'm pretty much there myself. Just wait til you get t'be 55....you'll hurt in place you didn't even know you HAD...(grin)

Kamakiri 04-04-2012 09:05 AM

Dunno about that, but I do know there's places that I have that I've never seen :D

DaveWM 04-04-2012 09:41 AM

flyback RCA 102132 or 1106255-1. You should grab ANY flybacks that you see, some are nearly impossible to find. will get a pic soon

That I would have remembered, didn't see one of those.....

Is it possible to get some photos of the stuff that is there?

For my recent mid sixties Zenith color acquisition, I need the volume control and channel selector knobs and the little front door which conceals the controls.

Not to open too large a can of worms (and in consideration of your back) perhaps we as a group help you disperse the cache?

Kamakiri 04-04-2012 09:10 PM

My back's much better today :)

I've got pretty much what I want. The guy wants $20 each for the remaining sets, aside from the roundies. If you guys want to pony up a Jackson a piece, I'll go get them and part them out or save them for you as is. Or drive to Buffalo :)

As I said, there's boxes on boxes of knobs, parts, test equipment, you name it.

I seem to recall one Zenith set was an unusually tiny console, I'm guessing it was maybe a 17" color or something. Almost looked like a table model console, if there is such a thing aside from that mini-RCA one. Again, from memory, there were 3 Quasar tube consoles, 3 or 4 Zenith rectangulars, and one RCA that I believe is this set:

If anyone's a member of that forum, post to this guy and tell him that I might have just found his set if he's looking for one :)

Also, at least one or two offbrand jobs. Couple XL-100 consoles also. Has a really nice untouched Admiral 7" 19A12 also. I could fill my full-size Chevy van 5 times and not cart it all away.

Kamakiri 04-04-2012 09:35 PM

Okay, here's SOME of what I got :)

The CTC-25A, just started cleaning it up a bit, it's gonna need a LOT of cleaning.....

Got a pair of these, one with different color controls that have the little windows and the color wheels on them.....

I'd love to see the rest go to homes......I just keep my stash to a bare minimum.

Kamakiri 04-04-2012 10:28 PM

Man, nothing warms the heart than seeing one of these old gals come back to life. After a slow power-up, the tubes warmed and the set came sparkling back to life :)

You just gotta love American made quality :)

lnx64 04-04-2012 10:37 PM

Yep, I agree, American made is the way to go. Though I say this while I use a Japanese TV.

But, gotta fix that cataracts. ;)

Do you mean the tabletop in Bakelite cabinet, like this one?

Did he quote a price? Certainly worth $20 (or more, duh) in my book. Or maybe I misread the model number . . . .

Tim:

I'll commit to the CTC-4 but Penthode has first dibs as he posted first on it.

That's the one. He's looking at probably 100 bucks on it. He was all over Google for the easier stuff, I don't think he sees much value in the rest.

Tim 04-05-2012 02:06 AM

Tim:

Actually, I could use the CTC-11 as well if the price is right. I'll send you a PM. I hope your back is recovering. I guess there are advantages for those that collect PEZ dispensers or matchbook covers :)

Kamakiri 04-05-2012 05:53 AM

Okay, so we've got tentatively 3 people in line now....heh :D

But folks, time is going to be of the essence here. If you guys really want these sets, let's not delay.....there are others local that have interest I'm told. I just want to help everyone out as much as I can with them, my skill sets aren't up to this particular task with the roundies.

In return for picking these up, though, I might ask for help looking at my flyback job on my CTC-12 in return, if that's acceptable :) .

DaveWM 04-05-2012 08:01 AM

I like that little RCA color set, they are nice and too big.

Kamakiri 04-05-2012 08:08 AM

Got two of those, both very similar. Apparently "portable" to RCA engineers at the time meant "all the weight of a console with a convenient carry handle". You could use these things as counterweights for a suspension bridge.

DaveWM 04-05-2012 08:37 AM

if you don't want and no one local wants, I would be interested in one, pehaps shipped via greyhound? if you can find a CTC number pls let me know I have the service manuals thru CTC 40 and would like to see the schematic.

Kamakiri 04-05-2012 08:44 AM

What set(s) were you interested in?

DaveWM 04-05-2012 08:54 AM

one of those rca "portables?" :D

Kamakiri 04-05-2012 10:41 AM

Well, I've got two of em here. I bought em cause I liked em, but I have no objections with parting with one or both if you like them more :) . I'm not one to deny the sets a happy home, even if it's not mine.

I don't need to make any money on them, I paid $20 each.....but I warn you, once I start tearing them apart and cleaning and fooling with them they're mine :D so if you want them, get your ducks in a row and they're yours for the same $20 each.

These are CTC-36 chassis, they use the 19HNP22 picture tube, and tip the scales at a whopping 65 pounds each according to the old bathroom scale. Ain't no way I can box these suckers reliably, but if you've got a plan, lay it on me......

DaveWM 04-05-2012 11:48 AM

does not look like they will pass the WAF right now, so will have to pass, but I know you will enjoy them. they are neat sets. Hope the CRTs test strong. Looking forward to seeing you start in on them (that is if nobody else takes you up one of them). I recently got a porta color, I think you will like the one you have there, they are neat, not the best pic but cute and small.

Kamakiri 04-05-2012 12:31 PM

It's all about balance, my friend :thmbsp:

Sure, I can get as many of these sets I want, but I know it's going to cost me a trip here:

http://www.hiddenvacations.com/li/Pe...r_Country.html

Marriage. Sometimes you gotta trade a :yuck: for a

Kamakiri 04-07-2012 04:02 PM

As I assumed would happen, the roundies are gone, so I'm going to move this thread over, now that it no longer applies to early color.....

Spoke to the owner this morning. I'm going back over to photograph all this stuff along with old test equipment, etc. Seems that everyone that wanted to pick through this already has, and there's a TON left.

Kamakiri 04-09-2012 08:35 PM

Went over today and shot pics of everything still there. Hopefully someone spots something they like :)

Here's a link to the album:

http://s44.photobucket.com/albums/f9...ld/TV%20Hoard/

If any of you do see something you like from the photos (and I think I got everything there, just about) give the owner a ring at (623)580-8532. If you make arrangements with him on something, drop me a PM and I'll pick it up. I can always hand him the cash if you want to PayPal me (not sure if he accepts it), and we'll worry about the logistics of getting it to you later.

This stuff is going to be bound for the curb soon, and we'd all hate to see that happen :)

bgadow 04-09-2012 10:09 PM

Some rarely seen stuff there, like the Motorola, Admiral and Sylvania color sets. If I were closer...

Kamakiri 04-10-2012 06:09 AM

Within a month, I'll be in the Shamokin PA area, and have a trailer in tow. I hadn't seen that Admiral portable before the trip there yesterday, it's too bad about the cataract. Still worth doing IMO.

DavGoodlin 04-10-2012 09:11 AM

Yes, I would do that Admiral and Motorola WID (photos 11-12)
If you are in Sham-O-kin, I work in Harrisburg and could blast up there to meet you.

BTW I have an 1980 RCA like #4 I am taking to the recycle, it has a weak CRT but works.
I also have TWO Zeniths like #7 (19DC11) that both work super-duper.

I have knobs for the '72 & '74 Zenith also.

Kamakiri 04-10-2012 09:17 AM

I'm in Buffalo, but I'm going to be headed into Shamokin in about a month. Give the guy a call, and make the deal with him, and let me know. That's his cell, he's usually around. If you need me to make the cash transfer, I can give you my PayPal, or you can deal direct with him, whatever works.

Kamakiri 04-10-2012 09:19 AM

BTW, if memory serves, that's not a Motorola, it's a Quasar.

DavGoodlin 04-10-2012 09:19 AM

Great - I mail checks, so I'll let you know.

Kamakiri 04-10-2012 03:16 PM

That's the Admiral saved :)

Anyone else? I don't mind holding them, or I can see the destinations of Cleveland and eastern PA as upcoming destinations for myself in the near future.

Electronic M 04-10-2012 07:54 PM

I hope someone saves that Chromacolor table set in the 7th picture. I'm broke right now, and I suspect that I could get chewed out if I asked for it right now.

Kamakiri 04-10-2012 09:19 PM

I'll grab it for you if you want. Not sure where you live, so I dunno if any of the locales I'm visiting are close to you.
