edison64 06-01-2012 10:37 PM

Wow southern Michigan, and me with a big empty truck bed...I would be very interested in some barn excavation...:D

Tubejunke 06-02-2012 02:48 AM

The first picture is a 1964 or so Zenith color "roundie" with UHF. I have one with a metal cabinet that was posted for sale, but I never found serious buyers. I have loved old sets for decades, but I always think that they are hard to get rid of once you need some space, get stumped, or just lose interest. Anyway, those Zeniths are supposed be GREAT performers. Mine made a beautiful color picture after decades of dormancy. Of course that only lasted for a few hours and the color went out. Darned capacitors! LOL I haven't powered it up since as I know that I was taking a big chance working without a Variac and a slow start.

snelson903 06-02-2012 04:16 AM

yes if this turns out to be something like that you tube video i seen early this week, those two guy's who found that out building full of tv's, that someone else broke into first they cut somewires out of a few tv's and broke the tube neck off of another, if it turn's out to be like that, that would be way to many tv's for me. ill spred the word .

snelson903 06-02-2012 04:31 AM

i pretty much gave up on this guy of ever calling me back,we talk on the phone over a month ago ,how long does it take to walk back and take some pictures and email them to me . maybe thats a good sign they never do anything to fast there. thats why they have been sitting a barn for decades, maybe they never throw anything away.

jstout66 06-02-2012 08:05 AM

2nd set is an RCA (perhaps a CTC-25) Third set I'm not sure.. I was thinking GE or Sears.

Don't give up so quick Years ago there was a guy here in laporte Who ran a local auction house You know the type I'll sell anything for a buck. After being out of the auction business for several years He had a huge sale Literally 6 outbuildings full of all types of items I had asked about several tv sets that he had Said he wasn't sure if he wanted to sell them or not After a couple months I did receive a call from his daughter Apparently he had decided to sell them So I went out To pick them up On arrival he told me That if I found anything else I wanted to go ahead and take it As he was going into assisted living and couldn't afford to have the property cleaned up I came home with 2 motorola bt 73 I thought I was bad picture to 2 predictas still waiting to be restored Atc 166 from rca victor A lot of old victrola parts And some other miscellaneous goodies. Your best bet maybe to actually go and see for yourself Who knows there could be something spectacular hiding out there waiting for you to find it If it were me I think I would spend a little gas money just to check it out Anyway hope you keep us informed as to the outcome

snelson903 06-02-2012 11:24 AM

oh yea ill be checking him out sunday if all goes well, i think he first called me in[ may] ,we talked and he was suppose to make his way into the barn and take pictures and email me ,that was over a month ago i almost forgot about him. i run three adds on craigslist showing picture's of the type of tv's im looking for,if you dont show pictures they always send a picture of a tv made 90's they think those tv are the old ones, but i get a steady flow of calls and emails. thats why i keep getting all the tv's i been posting latley ,you should try it tv's find you. that nice 55 zenith i got was 3 blocks down the street from me.

the barn was a bust ,its full alright of crap ,water damage, poop , and four crappy tv's that were nice at one time ,the b & w roudie combo was the best ,but he wants 100.00 for. i did buy the rca and the zenith on the hope that the color picture tube might be good for 20.00 bucks ,the rca cabnet looks like it could be restored but the chassie is rusty. heres what they really look like

miniman82 06-03-2012 04:07 PM

Might be good for parts...

DavGoodlin 06-03-2012 04:13 PM

I used to bring stuff home from farm dumps an restore them. Nothing is impossible.

Eric H 06-03-2012 05:32 PM

The Zenith doesn't have a cataract or a green halo so the tube may have been replaced at some time, increasing the chances of it being good.

zenithfan1 06-03-2012 05:56 PM

Yeah, it looks like they used an FBP with separate safety glass. It's too shiny to be the anti glare glass common to the bonded tubes. Unless, they left the safety glass out like a few sets I have. I have found nice replacements for them.

snelson903 06-03-2012 08:38 PM

guess what just got done testing the picture tube not bad vary strong red/green /blue gun is weak ,and looks like a new old flyback . the flyback must have been changed before stuffed in the barn and the rca dont look that bad either once you clean off some barn crap, so it looks like i might have at lease got some parts, i like that little rca mini console i had one like that it when i was younger that i picked out the trash i think ill restore it

kvflyer 06-03-2012 09:14 PM

Well, if nothing else, good parts that didn't go to the landfill. "Good on 'ya Mate".

snelson903 06-03-2012 10:19 PM

i could aways hunt around for a fishtank tv cabnet and put it back the way it was , that will show them ha ha

AiboPet 06-06-2012 12:20 PM

:tears: Actually.....next time I see something like that made into a FISH TANK, I'm gonna spend all night making their BMW into a fish tank! I promise to leave the sunroof open so they can FEED those fish!

JCFitz 06-06-2012 07:11 PM

If you decide to part out the Zenith I could use the plastic tube shroud from the back.

DavGoodlin 06-06-2012 08:03 PM

Never forget the first time I saw a "fishtank job". It was 1984 at a party in suburban (yuppie heaven) Dallas TX.

I was apalled and horrified, but said nothing and left soon after.

Those folks were obviously cooler than some dumb 20 year old hick that actually wasted his time making late-50s sets WORK again.

snelson903 06-07-2012 03:25 PM

after taking the zenith all apart the chassie is not so bad ,someone was playing with the tuner and lost some parts but i have extra parts ,im going to rebuild the chassie ,the picture tube is good . the cabnet might be able to save it to , with a ton of work, need to replace the bottom of the cabnet i cant beleave they used o.s.b. in the 60's .

Saving a set like this makes you a hero! :thmbsp:keep at it. I had rebuilt bottoms of cabinets in RCA's with 3/4" plywood when the OSB gets wet, it blows apart. Some used what we call MDF, which the later Zeniths did IIRC

I don't know if you still need the c.r.t cover, but I may have one in my parents attic (my old room) where there is still either an R.C.A. or a Zenith back cover from one of the many sets that I drug home, used, and scrapped back in the 80s. Back then most of the donations to the school system's electronics program were 50s and 60s sets. Instant attraction, but my dad used to hate me filling his house full of "junk." PM me if you need me to take a look.

I've got some Zenith tuners in good shape. Fairly sure that one is from a roundy. If you post a pic of yours and the ID numbers that I need to look for I can check to see if I have one in my parts stash.

snelson903 06-19-2012 10:05 PM

ok ill post a pic of it thanks
