Inside the KLH Model Twenty-One FM Radio
 

I posted this a few days ago over @ AK, but very few there appeared interested in an old radio.
I got this last year from Grumpy and Mike/Punker X (I think) had recapped it. It had developed a bit of a mechanical buzz due to a loose wooden dowel rod. So I opened it up to tighten things up and snap a few pics. Hope you'll enjoy.

Seems odd how they mounted that filter cap, way away from the terminal strip, and it looks like they soldered wires together halfway to reach? Maybe the photo doesn't show it right. They packed a lot of sound in those sets. I have a KLH phono in the stack to work on some day.

Looks to me as if the filter cap has been replaced with one that is much shorter than the original. The wires up to the solder joint are likely from the original cap.

Yup, as previously noted, all electrolytics were re-capped by Mike/Punker X.

Interesting square speaker magnet...

Those KLH radios sound super and much of the reason may be that speaker.
No substitute for weight when it comes to sound.

The Twenty One is a beautiful radio and one of my very few that gets daily use. I had my first one for years and then someone offered me a new one still in its box with the original price tag. Couldn't resist, so I upgraded to that and sold my first one, which is described in this article.

I have a KLH tr82 FM only radio http://www.wa2ise.com/radios/klhtr82.jpg which is a stereo set, but mine was missing the other speaker. I used one of those Radio Shack small sealed box speakers, and this radio works pretty well.

I'd like to have me the earlier "Tooob" model....But they go for a king's ransom now..

How much do they actually go for ? I want one too! The 21 has a bass control too though and also only one cabinet... And no tubes to change

Seems like TATTY tube specimens go for a couple-$300 bux on De Bay... THAT'S sticking in my feeble little mind..

If you think about it, scaled for inflation it's probably still not even close to the new price... And tatty means a project is possible... And if it was new it would cost a lot more ... Hmmm

I have one of the tube models (Model Eight), as well. It sits about two feet from the computer I'm using right now, and guess what gets played a lot.

I don't really watch prices of things. I paid a couple of hundred bucks for mine a few years ago and felt like I was paying top dollar. One reason I felt generous is that the seller drove two hours to deliver it.

It's hard to choose between them, but if the house starts on fire and I can only save one KLH, it would probably be the Model Eight.

I have just recently aquired a KLH Model 21 at Goodwill, mine though was in pretty rough shape as it was missing one of the tone control knobs and the speaker grille cloth was coming detached and it was missing the plugs on the back and the radio had a 60 hz hum coming out of the speaker and no audio from the tuner, I replaced the filter cap and there's still a 60 Hz hum coming out of the speaker and the radio still isn't picking up any stations for some reason. I tried to pull the amplifier board so I could recap it but the tuner board needs to come out as well and the screws holding the tuner board in place are almost stripped out on the heads and I can't get them to budge for the life of me, and I would love to get this radio going again so I can hear what all the fuss is about with these Radios.
