Wow look at this thing, it's pretty clean too! Looks like some of the caps have been replaced at one time already, so it's previous owner hopefully took care of it. I have NOT plugged it in yet, waiting on recommendations from you guys. Keep in mind, I don't have a variac at the moment.

Is it ok to just plug in, since it's not a high voltage TV?

My little sister wants to see it run. And to be honest, so do I.

But if it's not safe, I won't. Patience is a virtue.

The store that sold it to me said it worked when they plugged it in.

Ok I used a Kill-a-watt meter as a means of measuring it's current draw, and it was fine.

Powered up, and she sounds BEAUTIFUL! There's apparently still broadcasts on shortwave.

It's AMAZING how much performance the Germans could wring outta those sets on just a VERY few Tooobs...

Well, not only were they LOUD, but they sounded good, & the ones I've been around were QUITE sensitive...Those radios were a very visible part of the German "Economic Miracle" of the Fifties-Sixties, where a shattered, defeated country pulled itself up by its bootstraps...They helped establish the "Quality" reputation Germany enjoyed for their goods...

It's FM tuner needs a slight alignment though, To get 104.1 to come in, I need to tune to 107.

Oddly, the tuner dial does go to the propper edges and stops, but I can only go as low as 88MHz (like it should), but the highest it goes is about 105.9.

Btw, what's the pinout on the Tape port? I'd like to be able to plug another source into it.

Well the FM died. AM and shortwave still work.

I was on short wave, and turning the dial all the way to the left, and it hit the end, and it popped, made the magic eye tube blank out and the light flash. short wave continued to work, but when I went to use FM, it was dead. If I turn up the volume all the way, I can partially hear reception, but the eye tube shows no tuning whatsoever.

Check that the tuning cap plates aren't touching at the fully meshed low end of the dial.

Ok. If they were what would they have taken out? Cause am and fm are different tuners and it appears the am/sw tuner knocked out fm. If I crank the volume I can sorta make out fm reception a little but barely.

So here's what I found. On a oscilloscope in not seeing any activity from the fm tuner.

Maybe the ecc85?

Upon looking under the chassis, all electrolytics seem to have been replaced already. But it may need orange drops though (if that's what they are called).

On a radio this old, there could be slight corrosion on tube pins. Get the pins wet with cleaner and then insert/remove several times into each socket to improve connection. This might be the only problem. You'd have to pull the chassis to check the tuners.

Also, the piano-key switches on these radios need cleaning: spray, work switch on/off several times. Again this is an out-of-case operation.

Chassis is pulled. Also did actually clean the tube pins and piano buttons. They were crackly.

Still no fm.

So, in SW mode, what voltages do you measure on the plates of the tuning cap? I suspect that the short may have damaged a supply resistor, and the FM is more critical if the voltage is now lower...just a WAG!

Nice Emud Rundfunkgerat there! I have had three Nordmende with the same tubes you have. The Germans also had a way with getting silky-smooth sound from rather ordinary speakers.

The FM on my Turandot acted similar to yours and replacing the ECC85/6AQ8 fixed it.

Another one was the Elektra, I never did find what killed the FM, so I gave it to a friend whose late Mother always had their Elektra on BC in the kitchen, back when BC had musik.

Didn't those Cherman sets use somethin' funky on detecting FM, something called "Slope Detection" ? So they wouldn't have to use Armstrong's patent, & could use a tube or 2 less ? Somewhere in my Feeble Little Mind, I THINK I remember reading/seeing something about this..But I AM Certificated Crazy, & HAVE Had a Stroke, so don't put too much stock into what I say..(grin)

Well I've been tracing some voltages, and the V1 tube is not getting any voltage from M4. It's a dud. So I might be looking at a bad cap or something else.
