and it works....
soon to be recapped.

i had my grandpa come and give the tube a restore and now it has a
brighter picture. before it was really dim.

I am curiuos if it's the 7" metal tabletop. That's a nice little set!

Nice set, remembered me to an old man from Zanesville/OH, who offered me
the same metal case TV without knobs and back.
I didn`t take it for the asked 10 bucks because my rental car was filled up
to the windows and I saved every $ to pay my 1950 Cadillac conv. in Dayton.:yes:
I had stored some more radios and TVs in the cellar of a friend in Maryland which
I had to ship also anyway and anyhow to Germany.....:scratch2:
But all this is more than 20 years ago, anyway now I should be happy
to have this nice 9" Arvin, maybe knobs are now available?:no:

yes,
it is a nice set 17" pic. tube
also it has a hookup on the back for a arvin color converter
(nolonger on there) you can also see part of the wood cabinet ripped off
from the color converter being taken off

RECAP the damthing before usin' it.....

If you cant afford to replace every cap in the set because of money or something (I know how this is I often have to save several weeks to months to buy the caps for a set) then just replace all those that are around unobtnium parts like the flyback and if you cant do that test them all and if you find ones that are leaky or the value has gone down or dont use the set anymore or just replace them if you can.

At least replace the ones that will pull B+ to ground through those unobtanium parts when they short.

I agree with VK members Zenithfan1 and Einar72 -- recap the set before going any further. As a minimum, I'd replace the power supply filter capacitors. Your TV was made 63 years ago, and these capacitors are almost certainly defective. At best, they will allow 60-Hz AC hum into the TV's deflection, sync and other circuits; at worst, if these capacitors short, they can burn out the power transformer (by putting a direct short across the output of said transformer) if they don't blow the TV's own line fuse or the house fuse/breaker first.

Good luck, and I hope you get this set working. It may take a while, but when you get it working well, you will have a TV to be proud of. You won't see HD pictures on it (this set was built for the old NTSC television standards, so at best you will see a picture with black bars at either side and/or at the top and bottom, which can be compensated for using the zoom button on your converter's remote), but the picture you will see will be, owing to today's DTV standards, much sharper and clearer than any NTSC picture ever was. I grew up watching NTSC TV; when I got my flat screen about a year and a half ago I was amazed at the difference in picture quality between my RCA CTC185 19" portable color set (which, until then, I had been using for over ten years on cable) and the new flat set. You have probably already noticed this since you have a converter box on your GE portable, and have been watching Indianapolis TV in digital format since Christmas. Your Arvin console has a larger screen, though, so you will have that much more picture to see, even with the letterbox/pillarbox effect common when viewing HDTV on a standard TV.

im done recapping, and it still didnt come on so i replaced every hv tube
damper tube 5u4 1b3 6cd6 and it still doesnt come on no hv!

does anyone know what it is 6sn7?

When tvtim listed this set in the classifieds I thought it perhaps worth a trip to Indiana to fetch. I am now very sorry I didn't make that trip.


P.S.--no, I no longer want it.

Radiotron, I am suprised with a name like "Radiotron" that You do not know what a 6SN7 is.. It is a twin Triode, mainly used in Oscilators and in sync limiter or amplifier circuits.. In alot of sets, a number of the miniture tubes could take its place, such as the 6/12 AT7, 6/12 AU7 etc.. And many others..

Oh, let's not bust the kid's chops too much, think of the errors we all made when we were learning this hobby. The ones that make us cringe today...

When I have a TV or radio that works on its original caps, I won't run it that way very long. I take it as an assurance that the time money and effort I'll spend recapping it will likely be successful.

I'm the first to admit that when I was a kid, I destroyed some really beautiful TV's with a channel 1 on the tuner... also, many wire recorders, and console radios. I've got an Atwater Kent 84 cabinet, but I tossed the chassis because the power transformer was cooked. What a dork I was.

Yeah i murdered a philco roundie like the HAPPY DAYS tv.

Troubleshooting it till the main cap let loose... Stripped and tossed it thereafter...

Was before i got into High school electronics class with all the cool test equipment at my disposal... Ah, the TVs that might have lived if i had waited... :(
