I know a lot of company made tv for sears, and some where probably better than other...So with that being said , I was wondering if you guys could identified this one for me. The lady told me it was bought at sears in 83-84 and that's about it.

Thanks!

oups, I meant mystery sears, not Myster :P

Sorry, we can't use that picture, as it's too dark.
Try to take another picture, with the set off.
Also include the model number. The first three numbers, usually tell the source code.

Dreamsbeard 01-11-2013 09:02 AM

Thanks Dieseljeel,

But the thing is, that's the picture that's on the classified, and I do not want to trouble the owner again and end up telling them in the end that I do not take the set :P

There isn't any way to tell from the cabinet style?

Unless someone has a means of britening up the picture, too hard to tell.
If the thing's cheap enough, just buy it. Seems to work fairly well.
These things are getting harder to sell. As a result of the times and economy. I don't see too many cabinets sets at the thrifts. :sigh:

Samsung?

Dreamsbeard 01-11-2013 11:13 AM

I wasn't aware that samsung built televison before the mid ninety...If that would be the case would the parts (flyback and cie) even be "available" in case of failure?

lnx64 01-11-2013 11:52 AM

Lol my Samsung is 80's. ;) And the flyback is available, but the ASTI brand sucked hardcore, but the HR Diemen was awesome.

radiotvnut 01-11-2013 11:57 AM

Sanyo and Toshiba built most TV's for Sears during the '80's. I'm sure this one is a Sanyo and should be a decent set. I think Samsung made a few of their lower end small screen color & B&W TV's; but, I don't know of any larger screen sets that they made. BTW, Samsung started importing TV's over here in the late '70's.

Dreamsbeard 01-11-2013 12:09 PM

Well, I guess I was wrong! haha! I had no idea samsung began importing that early.

I sent another e-mail to the owner and she tell me that it's her father television and he confirmed that it is a Kenmore television...is that possible? I know kenmore make fridge and appliances...but television? (but hey what do I know ;) )

ctc17 01-11-2013 12:47 PM

No it has to be a Samsung, its always a Samsung and everything will be a Samsung. Its the universal talking point that has been riding at the top of the news ticket for every.
You should get the set that way you can have a my Samsung.

Dreamsbeard 01-11-2013 12:57 PM

I'm scared ;)

lnx64 01-11-2013 01:22 PM

Just ignore ctc17. He does this sometimes.

radiotvnut 01-11-2013 02:30 PM

Kenmore was the appliance brand for Sears; but, I've never seen the name used on any of their electronics. Up until the early '70's, they used the Silvertone brand on their electronics. From the early '70's until the early-to-mid '80's, their electronics were branded "Sears". In the early '80's, they used the SR1000 and SR2000 brands. By the mid '80's, they used the LXI brand. In the early '90's, they pretty much dropped their house branded electronics and started selling various other brands. The set here falls in the era where it could be branded as Sears, SR2000, or LXI.

Looks like a 25V CRT. The 27V CRT's were also out at that time. Possibly a lower priced model. More than likely a Sanyo built set.
Goldstar built some of their sets around that time frame.

Good, Sanyo seems to be the concensus, i'll try to grab the set!

Are those set more desirable thant the Hitachi set from the same era?

We didn't work on many Hitachi sets when I was with Sears during the time of these console sets. Nearly all consoles were Sanyo, and some portables were Hitachi. Many portables built by Sanyo had the soft-touch buttons on the front that changed channels by just brushing a finger over the sensor button. Interesting design.

Towards the end of the decade, Sanyos were using an IC in the power supply that was owned by Sears. Suddenly, it was no longer available around 1984, and I trashed so many of these sets. Sears stopped supplying this IC for parts services around this time. Made you buy another set.

lnx64 01-11-2013 08:28 PM

This soft touch button sounds like my Sony CDP-101's control buttons. They don't click but only just touching them causes a reactions.

Curtis-Mathes had a setup like that around the same time. It seemed like it fired a neon lamp and that changed the channel.

Would that IC in the power supply be a high failure part? If I get the set I want to be able to repair it so it can have it as long as possible.

i cant really see the tuner that well but it looks like an early cable ready set.might be from 1978-1980 era with a delta gun crt.if so,could be a samsung built set.saw a couple back in the day.very good picture and well built.seems like the very last delta gun sets had digital tuners.rca,sylvania,magnavox,etc.love to have a sylvania superset e-48 with a digital tuner

Dreamsbeard 01-15-2013 02:06 PM

Maybe it's me but I was looking back to the picture of the TV , and it seems to me that the picture is a bit weird. I feel as the red is to bright and the rest of the screen seem to be too dark...
Anyone is getting the same fist look feeling?

lnx64 01-15-2013 02:43 PM

Not really, it looked fine to me.

Song of Kim Il Sung (n.) Not the same song Sam sung.

Dreamsbeard 01-26-2013 10:16 AM

Well I was right to be suspisious. I went to see the set this morning, and first thing I noticed was that the wood cabinet was not in the best of shape. Then the guy turned it on...oh boy...heavy red smear with somewhat dim picture...so I left empty handed.
Too bad because I liked the style and the guy had the orginal remote(witch is a plus).

There is another early/mis 80's Curthis Mathes up in the classified right now, that I was interested in , but after reading the bad rep that the Curthis Mathes have around here I'm not even sure that i'll bother to even check it out.

RobtWB 01-26-2013 10:32 AM

go check out that Curtis Mathes set, it may suprise you
had 3 of them, now down to 2 since i gave a console set away
all 3 of mine were/are NEC sets and all work fine
somewhere on this site there are pics of my sets

Dreamsbeard 01-26-2013 11:06 AM

Yes I've seen your set, they are great looking! I was just a bit worried about the quality and longevity of the set. But if you say that they are decent sets, I'll go check it out.
thanks!

holmesuser01 01-26-2013 10:24 PM

Older C-M sets, at least the color set I saw, was an RCA CTC-15 clone.

Dreamsbeard 01-26-2013 11:47 PM

Yes , it seems that older set where very descent, but the 80's one seem to be considered as crap. It really is too bad because I really love 80's tech (the fact that I was born in 82 might help ;) )

Get a Sony Trinitron from the early 80s, or late 70s. I think that in terms of performance for the era, they're unbeatable.. especially the "made in japan" ones.
