Thinking about getting this... Fleetwood 21-41

As far as I can tell, looks like a Fleetwood Constellation 21-41.

For $20, not a bad deal.

Anyone have some info on this set like a service doc or such?

The seller says it was powered on and gave a quick flash before dying... hoping they meant the dial lamp lit up and went out when an internal fuse blew or so... Either way if I do go take a look I'm bringing a multimeter and ohming out the CRT and power transformer.

Is this a Fleetwood built by Conrac or is it the Canadian Fleetwood company? Apparently they are not related.

20 bux, you can prolly recoup THAT out of selling the Tubes...

No kidding, a good 21" CRT's worth that, that's a nice Collaro changer in that thing too.

Definitely a canadian fleetwood.

Am waiting to hear back from the seller, will do my best to convince someone with a car to help me go pick it up. :D

I'll be heading out this Thursday to get it - for $20 It's no big loss if the tube is shot, it still makes a nice display piece and worst case I'll do something "reversible" with it or find another home... but that's for later, too many what-ifs right now.

Will post pictures in a new thread once I get it, keep your eyes peeled for the restoration!

It's gonna be interesting as I'll be armed with a DMM, a variac, and very little else, though I can source a scope for alignment. :D

Einar72 05-14-2013 03:14 PM

Are you driving a Fleetwood there to pick it up?

Electronic M 05-14-2013 03:37 PM

A scope alone is only good for checking waveforms, and adjusting synchroguide based horizontal oscillator circuits, buut...Without a good sweep generator you should not touch the alignment(except for the audio only stages).

Definitely agree with you on that point. I've watched all of bandersen's youtube stuff, so I know what I'm getting into without any of that gear. I know where I can probably source some more of the required gear if needed, but I don't know for sure. In any case, I'm not touching it unless I know I can do it right.

You would certainly need a good sized car! That set is nice looking. Hopefully you will be able to get something in there working.

Is that shortwave on the upper radio band?

Certainly looks like it.

Car wise it _should_ fit per the dimensions in that ad, it's a hatchback in which the rear seats can be folded down for space... but theory might collide with reality in ~2 hours though :D

Electronic M 05-16-2013 01:14 PM

Good luck!

VintagePC 05-16-2013 04:55 PM

IT IS MINE! We _barely_ fit it into a mazda3 hatchback, and it was definitely a challenge. Ended up pulling the TV chassis so we could lift it.

New thread here where I'll be doing the restoration.

Did you take a picture of it in the car? That had to be quite the sight... in the back of a Mazda 3!

Probably sort of like one of those circus cars that all the clowns come out of....:D

I know what a car PACKED full of vintage electronics looks like from all the swap meets I've attended with a couple of c-notes and the family Honda CR-V(both the new one and the old one that got totaled)...There have been a few times where I dragged two consoles at once home in that thing(usually along with a bunch of tube radios and other gear for padding not to mention the folks up front and me in the back seat swimming in gear).

The CR-V is one of the best SUVs IMHO for this kind of hobby...big enough for most large consoles(or two smaller ones :D), some gear, and passengers, yet not a freakin' boat to drive and with fairly good MPG.

There was about 1 inch to spare. The TV chassis went in the side door and was half wedged up on the gap in the bottom of the cabinet, and resting on the window. The top back corner of the cabinet was about 1" from the rear windscreen. I still don't know how we managed that. :D

Didn't think to take a pic though.

Charlie 05-16-2013 06:19 PM

Yeah, it's hard to remember to take a pic. By the time it's all done, you're just thankful that it somehow got squeezed in there.

Funny to think... I remember times in which I squeezed console sets into my 72 Duster... mainly due to the way the front seats were made... the backs would fold all the way down in a horizontal position... allowing to get some pretty decent sized sets in there.

I tried to get a color roundie in my 67 Galaxie 500 one time... and failed. I was in Las Angeles. The Galaxie had bucket seats, and mega square footage inside the car, but the back of the passenger seat didn't fold down quite enough. I would have had to remove the passenger seat to get the set in there. I didn't have a wrench to get under the car with, so the seat remained... and the roundie did, too. :sigh:

BigDavesTV 05-16-2013 06:36 PM

Cool combo tv, best of luck to you, VintagePC! We hope to see pic's. of it working one day! To chime in with Charlie, My first car (1977) was a '69 Pontiac Catalina, 2-door sport coupe, with bench seats! By opening wide, the big long passenger side door, with front bench seat all the way forward, and the seatback on that side tilted toward the dash, I hauled (one at a time, of course:), two different RCA Color Consoles! One was a CTC16 Roundie "The Gladstone", and the other a CTC25 rectangular in a nice French Provincial Style cabinet! Of course then I was 17, and not full of the arthritis!

VintagePC 05-16-2013 08:11 PM

So do I :)

I think I mentioned this earlier but I have a new thread where I'll be doing the actual restoration with lots of pics, be sure to drop by there if you haven't already. Once I'm done or have a huge headway, I'll do a writeup like the one linked in my sig below. ;)

Gotta share the awesomeness with the world!
