Not familar with this TV - what are some interesting things about it?

I have been looking for a Dumont RA-108A Mansfield. Have not seen 1 for sale yet. Seen a lot of these 103s. If anyone ever sees a 108A Mansfield, shout at me. :thmbsp:

It was my mother's 1st TV and want to try and find one for her and restore it.

Owner is asking $225.

I have no place to put it but it certainly is a pretty TV.

I paid $40 for the table model version in May. As usual, the relay and WW focus pot was bad, lots of e-caps, this is the 2nd 12QP4 extra weak. [The 'LP4 is too long in this set]. Console not as easy to find room for.
I would not want it for more than $100. Others might disagree.
It does look good.

That one sure looks clean. Possibly the light finish is harder to find than the mahogany.

I wouldn't hesitate to pay $225 for it. Especially if the CRT is good. Early Dumonts are very scarce around here.

Very nice. I have never seen an RA-103 in blonde, assuming that's an original finish rather than a bad strip job. The cabinet looks identical to my RA-103 Meadowbrook, apart from the color. I believe the square dial (rather than round) makes it a RA-103D.

What it's worth depends partly on where you live. I have only found a couple of early DuMonts here in the Pacific NW.

I don't see how it could have been refinished, the front panel lettering all looks original and near perfect. It also has the light colored knobs that match the blond finish.

Ah, I didn't look at the close-up before. Yes, it looks original, and in gorgeous condition. What a beauty.

the closest i've seen ( and i have one ) is a RA-110 , it is set up the same way the mansfield is except the dial area is square , and i might have seen one like my 110 but mostly seen the 112 and 109 sets on craigslist in the last few months

HOLY COW!!! That is the exact one!!! I have a picture of my Mom as a little girl sitting in front of it. Check it out. That set is gorgeous. You did an AMAZING resto on it! WOW!

Here is the 108 I brought home from Wisconsin a few years ago.

I haven't restored it yet, but power it up every so often. The radio has a wonderful sound and the crt does light and shows snow. When I first got it, it would pick up a signal but in really needs a recap to function as it should. She is a beauty though.

That's the one with the 45 player. NICE!

I have been debating on whether to find another home for it. The tv collection has expanded into a storage unit from my house and garage. The other half has been getting on me.

It is so hard to let these go. They have to go to a good home.

I just started collecting and already have 5 sets! :banana: I could see that happening easily.

I am trying to find the EXACT Dumont that my mother had. Not the one with the 45 player. Very tempting though!!! :scratch2:

If the CRT we're good I wouldn't hesitate spending that kind of money for that set Dumont are not seen in this area very often

I live within a couple of hours of Charlotte, NC and I contacted the owner. He is the relative of a collector who died and left him with the set. He presumes that everything is there, but really knows little about anything other than its cosmetic condition. He told me that most of the man's collection was usually in working condition. For that kind of money I would have to be able to test the crt at least. It's easy to want to plug it in, but we all know that is not the right approach.

At least it doesn't have the 19AP4 that is so dreaded. I sure would like to have this, but my good sense is telling me to leave it alone. I have posted so many times about needing space and trying to lighten my load, which I have lightened some. I find old Dumonts of that vintage particularly interesting. What to do; what to do.....

I'm about 90 minutes away but like you have absolutely no place to
store it. It really is a sweet looking TV. I think I read somewhere that
it has 30 tubes in it. I talked to him too and he states that he is firm on
the price. Hope someone on this forum gets it and starts a restoration thread. Be fun to learn what is discovered restoring this set.

Well, somebody got one nice DuMont, but I guess it was none of us. I came really close and the owner came off of the firm price. Could have had it for $150, but I was given that word along with the statement that the set had to move THAT day. I just didn't have the time to get down there. Carl, I hope it was you who got it! The fact remains that I need another set like a hole in my head, but special arrangements could have been made for this one. I have a feeling that the set was in working condition as is because it was owned by a collector who passed and this relative just wanted to be rid of it.

Oh well, one day I will find the right DuMont at the right time. I can't take on the monolithic sets, but they made some nice table models which at this point suit me more that the space eating floor models.

so the 105 is a square screen set and the 105B is a rounded double D set ? wow i thought the craigslist one was a 108 without doors but it must be the 105B , they are simular.

I live in an area where DuMont was not a common set. My set basically fell in my hands at a thrift store.

Always look at those cabinets when you see them. You never know what you might find inside one. I almost passed my DuMont RA-113.

And you just never know who may have bought an early DuMont new, because they were about the best set made in the 40s and early 50s, therfore the wealthy were the biggest percentage of owners. Sort of the same phenomenon with early color sets. How many people know, or knew people who owned a color TV in 1955? Not many I am sure, but they were out there.

The only DuMont that I have ever been lucky enough (or strong enough) to own was an RA-109A. I got it back around 1983 when such things were floating around everywhere and largely seen as junk. I was a nerdy teenager who found electronics from that era incredibly intriguing. The junk dealer that sold it to me happened to be the one time owner of my area's first TV sales stores. He sold the TV new to the president of Stanley Furniture Company for somewhere near a grand around 1948 or so.

Not that this individual was some kind of movie star or anything, but I always thought that the history was neat to know if for no other reason Stanley Furniture Company was one of this areas biggest employers for much of my lifetime and made some of the best furniture on Earth. The last round of layoffs came about 3 years ago, but the map still bears the name Stanleytown, right next to Bassett and a whole lot of pharmacies.....
