1970's Sony trinitron worth it ?
4 Attachment(s)
Theres a listing for 1 of these Old Sony Trinitrons for $20.
Anyone know the year or model ? Worth getting ? |
Screen size looks to be under 19" so it wouldn't be of much interest to me, but I would have to say yes in your case. Mid 70s maybe? I love my '87.

Worth $20? maybe, $250 no way.

Late '70's. Probably worth $20 IF the CRT is strong. I'd turn it on before purchase to see what the picture looks like. I've seen many weak Sony CRT's from the late '70's-early '80's and Trinitron's usually don't rejuvenate well. Several years ago, I junked two early '80's 19" Sony's that had a great green gun; but, the blue and red guns were totally dead and wouldn't take a hit. Most of the Sony's that would take a rejuvenation looked good for a short period and then fell back down, looking worse than they did to begin with.

I saw a portable one of these at the local thrift a few years back for $5.. I didn't get it.. I went back for it, and it was gone.. These 70s and early 80s Trinitrons seem to be hot items.. I'd get it, if the CRT is good..

Looks to be a KV-1951, 1976 model. has a great picture of the CRT is strong. I just had to toss one out, long story.
Great companion to an SL-5400 Betamax :) Worth about $25 if the CRT is strong. |
76-78 my guess. If the set is totally dead dont touch it.
Probably has SG613 & you will never get it to go. 73 Zeno:smoke: |
Maybe a KV-1521 or KV-1721? Those (and the remote control versions) were the best sets of their sizes in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

I could never use an SK, NTE, ECG, HEP or other replacement tho they were listed as subs RadioTVNut nails it on the CRTs, once they go weak there is no coming back |

I used to get my Sony parts from Joseph Electronics in Niles, Il. |
Reminds me of my KV-1205 from 1978. Which is a low hours set with a very healthy CRT but needed chassis work due to intermittent start-up. Luckily, all it involved was replacing some leaky lytics. It's true; the crt's don't rejuv well & the semiconductors can be confusing and unobtainable.

Joseph Electronics In Niles Illinois are they still over there . I thought they went out of business . Just asking . I use to live in Illinois but cant recall if they moved .

I quit repairing TV's, on a regular basis by the later 80's, so lost track. :sigh: |
FWIW I just got a '78 KV-1742R on craigslist for free, but had to drive nearly 80 miles to get it. it's a nice low hours set that was in a spare bedroom virtually unused. for a vintage set the picture is amazing, totally worth the drive :)

I remember a Sony update about servicing these sets, if they had the SG613. The big killer was the horiz IC that drove the horizontal SG613. The set is actually "looped". One SG613 turns the other off when it goes on. If the horizontal IC is slow to start the SG613's both die again. Start on the power supply was a kick start from an electrolytic charging.
And yes, as mentioned, you have to use Sony parts or it will either just blow up on turn on or be a comeback shortly. Bizarre critter! I wonder what made Sony get so complicated? |

EXCELLENT set, but not worth much of anything (yet). Sooner or later, those will be collectable, since they were the high-end icon of TV in the 70s. I wouldn't recommend paying much more than $10 or $20, but that's me... Pay what you think it's worth to you, and you won't regret it..

BTW, I've got the Sony bulletin on how to check the SG613, and one about the correct replacement criteria for some other semiconductors. I've got it and the Sony Semiconductor Replacement Handbook (Sony subbed alot of trannies). Cheers, |
