The dump guy was holding this old Magnavox for me, but the wife said "No WAY, too icky" and yeah, it probably was. But barely!! Yes you shoulda! I rescued the knobs from another of that same model many years ago from the rubble of a demolished house before the cleanup. It was about the only thing left to salvage by the time I found it. :( Sad to think another's been lost.

I have the console version of this set. It was an easy restoration and is now one of the best playing sets in my collection. What a shame

I would have ignored her and taken it. It just needs to be cleaned.

I have that unit, but it has a busted neck on it. :( I would have grabbed it up in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I know, but we really are space-challenged here, if I'm gonna bring in another old TV, it's at least got to be somewhat mold/mildew free. If you saw the clutter in our basement (it's outrageous, even after an entire summer of busily purging) you just might silently nod your collective heads in agreement. Besides, it wasn't a Philco!!


But I suppose it could have been parted out, and in that regard I screwed up.

BTW my wife was horrified at the comments, she feels awful!!!

Not quite mold/mildew IIRC....Most knobs of that type of plastic grow that when not handled enough (vernacular for it is Knob fungus).....It is VERY easy to fix. Just pull the knobs off, let them soak in a cup of Ammonia formula Windex (or equivalent cleaner) for 1-5hours, and what does not dissolve/peel off you can scrub off with a discarded tooth brush (or equivalent). I've done it many times. Not really as icky as you think, just looks bad until dealt with.

Webster Chicago/Webcor stuff has a high tendency to get that.

The one reason I'd have drug it home was the crt; if it tested dead I would have carried it back to the dump. But, if you don't need the crt right away you then have to find a place to store it.

I'm not familiar with that set - what year was it produced?

There's just times when you have to ignore the voices in your head (or outside your head) and just simply do what you would do, or want to do. If it had been me, i'd grabbed that and ran like hell. As i do with anything that old. I just recently cleared out a bunch of sets simply because they were all later models. 80's and 90's. No room for stuff like them. I kept my 50's and 60's sets. Only 80's sets i kept was my 84 RCA, My Zenith Digital System 3 in a chinese cabinet, an 84 Zenith 19" and my 86 RCA. As for something this old, i can always find room.

I know how you feel. I passed on a RCA console roundie with AM/FM and a turntable. It was HUGH! I have no room right now. I would guess 8 feet long!
For a while I picked up lawnmowers to see if I could get them running. I stopped at 14. Most are ethanol damage to the carburators. One was a Briggs with points and condenser ignition. Runs great now!
And I passed on two BPC sets on the way to work this morning........

Update: I just called the dump guys house and left a message DONT SMASH THAT TV I CHANGED MY MIND!!!

I gotta agree, that that one is pretty icky. But like they say, beauty in the eye of the beholder. But personally I'd keep my wife over that thing. Not that she'd have any say in the matter. :D

That white fuzz on the knobs cleans up pretty easy. It's some sort of impurity in the plastic. So, if the chassis isn't all rusty, or the cabinet rotten, it should be fine once worked on. Though that rusty trim under the knobs is not a good sign...

I had one like that and sold it at the swap meet a few years back for $5. It needed a hor out tube socket due to arcing but it lit up enough to tell it also had a vertical problem. I just had to make room.
I had to make room. I never did find the model number in Sams but estimate its from 1956-7 and VERY simple to restore.

BTW, Ive driven around with something in the back of my car for weeks because I'm out of room and deciding what can go to make room.

That's the kind of thing my wife would do...as much as she gets frustrated by all my stuff, she still keeps an eye open for me. She may not realize how much I appreciate her patience.

Tell her we're all proud of her!

Now repair it and make it work like new again!

ANd while you are at it....SHOW her how much you appreciate her deed for you. BUY something SHE wants...take her to a nice DINNER...or do SOMETHING...JUST for HER !!

I was lucky like that, also. My ex-wife supported my hobby, and helped me pick up and carry the sets I bought.

That is awesome that she was able to save the TV.

Your Wife was Right. Happy wife, Happy life! That set was a POS. I can't imagine why you would have even considered saving it. Sheesh!

Hopefully you can make it shine and work well. And if you're lucky, she'll let you set it up in some "public" portion of the house (like a guest bedroom or dare I say it the living room..). :D
