One owner roundies are still out there....scored a Zenith
 

Scored this beauty off of my Craigslist TVs wanted ad. The previous owner bought it new in '63 while he was stationed at Fort Dix. After his tour of duty he brought it back home to Buffalo, covered up in the back seat of his '58 Ford convertible. Model 5540 chassis 25LC30, with "high fidelity" sound. Sams calls it a '64.

It sat in the same bedroom untouched since 1968 or so and worked the last time it was plugged in, in the early '70s.

I blew a nice blanket of dust off the chassis, still have a lot of cleaning to go, but the set shows promise :) .

Wasn't free but very reasonable I think. Took a half hour drive to get it. Well worth it IMO. Haven't touched it yet, but I'll post up when I have.

Gonna do anything about the cataract? It looks faint but it would bother the heck out of me.

Looks like some of the electrolytics have been replaced at some point or another. Normally the one next to the transformer is a black paper tube type.

Those cans aren't original for sure.

The voltage doubler cap is a nice "shocker" too. The can is 200 volts above ground! :thumbsdn:
The set is a very high-hours set. It's also an early production "L" model set, no UHF.
I wonder if the CRT is a Zenith replacement? Green halo, instead of a cataract. :scratch2:

Nope. I tend to have lousy luck with ANY tube color set, so if it doesn't show some signs of life after testing tubes and a slow power up, I don't plan on busting my onions to get it going. We'll see what she do :)

Looking at the heat sink fins on the power transformer, I can't help but think that it's the wrong answer. That it is getting too hot, and they should have used a bigger transformer without fins.

Zenith liked to use cooling fins on transformers, I have several black and white sets with them.

Generally Zenith stuff comes back. There is one capacitor that will for sure be dead in the set. it's like 50uf 25V or something very unusual like that in the Vertical Section. It lives under the chassis, if you're facing the back of the TV, its to the far right of the chassis, with the TV facing down, going in though the Service Saver door, in the bottom corner. You have to hoist the chassis up a little to even get at it.

Zenith seems to use really good, reliable parts.

That was most of the problem....people generally used them to death for that reason ;)

Several firms used them. As long as the transformer is fused on the primary and secondary loads.
Most of the transformer failures were the result of overfusing or lightning direct hits.

I'd still take a Zenith over an RCA. These early sets with the separate bass and treble controls have great sound, also.

You could probably triple your money if the cloverleaf is solid. Many folks here needin' one...let the bidding begin? :)

The very first thing i would do upon acquiring a Zenith roundie is check the condition of the plastic (nylon?) H.efficiency coil form. Especially on a high-hours set. If that form lets go, everything else is moot till the coil's replaced.
The three adjustment coils on the convergence panel use the same kind of forms. The middle one looks like it has already let go (of course that doesn't render the set unusable.)

Just the end is broken, the coil itself is intact. That I can fix if needed be. I've had those suckers come apart and unwind.

Picture tube is good, so that's a plus :)

I'm glad you mentioned that horiz efficiency coil, as I forgot about that one until I talked to a friend on the phone last night about the set, then forgot again this morning! Looks like it's been replaced. I seem to remember those coils having a baby blue coil form, this one is bright lime green, which I can't remember ever seeing. In either event, it looks good.

There's bumblebees and white time bombs under there, so if I check tubes and get a reasonable response on power up, it'll get a recap.

:yes:I'm watching how this goes for you no matter how busy I am building onto our house so I can have some quality basement space for sets like this.
The 25LC20-30 is a great chassis IIRC.

I just remembered the 25LC30 is the same chassis that's in my model 5119. I think it's a pretty good performer. Looks like my convergence is off just a tad on the lower left.

A 25LC20/30 likely SHOWED that show--when it came out. They would only have been a few years old then...

Yep, three to four years old, about the same age as me. There were some great movies made back in those days. Not to mention equally great TV's. :)

You mean once the theaters were done showing it and it premiered on TV....That is the MOVIE Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Probably been around 5-10 years since I last watched it through, but I'd know those screen shots anywhere.

Replaced about a dozen dead or shorted tubes and repaired a tube cap lead and did a slow power up. Look! Spumoni!! :D

Well, I wanted to see if I had something to work with here, and apparently I do :yes: . No signal at all, but the dial lamp was burned out so I never knew exactly which channel I was on ;) .

Anyway, it'll end up getting the full monte once I finish up a problem child 8TS30 and a couple customer radios that came in last week.

IIRC, "Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang" was THE big item of summer 1969. I think it was one of the first movies where the studio put on a "Full-Court Press", pushing the movie, toys, & trinkets marketed thru fast-food venues. If you turned on the TV that summer, you WERE gonna hear, "Oh, you, pretty Chitty Bang Bang, we love you.." ESPECIALLY on a Saturday morning.
