Set at an upcoming estate sale....what is it?

Appears to me to be an early 80s Zenith. What's really interesting about this particular set is that it appears to be a 19" table model with a WOOD case. Can't recall seeing one before. Save the pic and zoom in on it, and you'll see what I'm talking about. At a first glance, it's a regular 80s set.

Anything rare and great here? :scratch2:

zeno 01-27-2016 08:47 AM

Zenith SM1971P Top of line 19" that year.
Spacephone, timer, comb filter, color sentry. Uses the gold
hand unit with phone keys.
I bought one new. Will give a fantastic pix. It is a 9-160 set.
Mine survived into the 2000's then I lost track of it.

BTW looks like a Zenith / Sony beta split VCR beside it. Fantastic
with the camera, as good as any.

Sams says that's a 1981. I may just have to go buy that set :)

Good call, it's pretty sweet. Doesn't take over a room either.

truetone36 01-27-2016 02:00 PM

I'd grab everything that's with the set, too

Electronic M 01-27-2016 02:35 PM

I was given one by Arcanine a few months ago. I need to get back to trying to fix it...I was in the process of trying to swap the 9-160 board.

jstout66 01-27-2016 03:41 PM

It's one of the best sets I own. Retail was $549.00 when new, so it was the best 19" set they made in 81. My 9-160 board sassed a few weeks ago (after YEARS of heavy use with no problems)
Ran the set to Walter Beers and he re-capped the board for me.
Zeno is dead on with the remote it uses. I've got the original with mine, but a few keys stick, so I bought a spare a few years ago. The spare uses that stupid J battery tho. Original is a 9V. Also.. this set is one of Zenith's first with OSD (time and channel)
It doesn't have sleep mode, but you CAN set it like an alarm with an auto on / auto off feature. FYI... it weighs a ton for a 19" set.....

Jon A. 01-28-2016 12:02 PM

I have one of those gold hand units. Got it new in the box and used it with a later model Zenith console for a bit. I recently found out there's a replacement hand unit made by PhilipsECG, the RT 111. There's a NOS unit on eBay right now. Unusual for sure.

Came home with it for a quite modest sum :)

The antenna package has never even been opened. Only thing it's missing is the cover for the remote battery....

jstout66 01-30-2016 02:21 PM

hopefully it works. Take a screen shot when you get it hooked up.
If you have a land-line, it's fun to call people on!

Kamakiri 01-30-2016 02:30 PM

Set works very well, but the remote does nothing though it's getting power to the board. There's some type of weird pot on the board with a dial on it, does it require some type of setup?

The VCR was gone.....

walterbeers 01-30-2016 03:03 PM

Those are a nice set, I just got done replacing the filter capacitor in jstout66 (jamies) space phone zenith and darned it almost looks as good as a high def. Yes, the 9-160 boards give quite a bit of trouble and it seems as if they are almost impossible to find rebuilt or good ones. Best thing to do is replace the caps, and make sure there are no bad solder joints on the 9-160 board. The dual section filter capacitor 300uf 160 volt has to be replace with 2 separate caps.

dishdude 01-30-2016 04:02 PM

Wow! Nice score. That set looks like it is brand new.

What's this RT 111 replacement remote? Is it an aftermarket replacement?

Kamakiri 01-30-2016 04:29 PM

Honestly I probably won't keep this set. The only reason I got it is so that a beautiful set like this wouldn't get tossed in a dumpster. My collecting preferences are usually a bit older than this, so it'll end up eventually going to a home that appreciates it :)

Sure is, first time I've seen one. It was part of a lot of four. The auction ended with no bids; you can check it out here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201508032457

Tim, check the remote/manual switch at the TV, it might be dirty.

Edit: or turned off. Didn't see Andy's post before. I was still on the first page and used Quick Reply.

Quick and dirty infrared remote test: aim it at yourself and watch the emitter(s) through a digital camera.

Wow never saw one. Thanks for the link!

jstout66 01-30-2016 05:38 PM

Tim, my set has a manual/remote button behind the door. You think that switch might be dirty? Also I assume you tried another Zenith remote, just in case your remote is bad? Or.. do you have another Zenith sitting around where you can try your remote on?

Well, I got nothing doing this, so I bought a really nice looking remote on ebay for $20 shipped. I'll give that one a try :)

The real wood cabinet is awesome. If you come to PA to see Dave, I may be interested.

Geoff Bourquin 01-31-2016 02:43 PM

Is that an infrared remote, or is it one of their last ultrasonic units? Does the "shooting end" have a dark red window, like modern remotes or does it have a little speaker grille? The picture of the TV looks like there is a grille between the LEDs, like they used on sets with ultrasonic recievers.

The remote is infrared, I have an identical unit. The grille is for the Space Phone microphone.

Shango066 made a video on a set like this. (Or similar). CRT was fried because it was designed to run at all times the unit was powered on, even just for the radio.

Looks like an early 50s Westinghouse to me.

edit add: Notice the bezel and knob treatment on these sets:

Here's another. Almost looks XL-100 ish with the knobs, but the control door is too wide and the rest of the knob layout doesn't seem right. Thoughts?

jbattles 07-21-2016 07:15 AM

Its a Magnavox it could be a tube set but looks like a solid state. There first solid states were good worth getting if you got room.

Kamakiri 07-21-2016 07:41 AM

This one's definitely getting saved. Told a local TV buddy about it, and he's borrowing my van to pick it up. If it was an XL-100 I'd grab it, but he thought Magnavox as well, and I have to stay within my wheelhouse :)

Electronic M 07-21-2016 08:31 AM

The clock radio is a Panasonic. I've got one with a different dial.

zeno 07-21-2016 08:40 AM

Sony Wega atop an early Maggy SS set I believe. Get the
Maggy & leave the Sony for the gamers. Probably not the
common T991 or T809 style chassis but earlier. Lots of little
modules on a vert chassis & normal power supply. Resolder
the mother board & all the modules at the connectors will
fix the 10-20 intermittents. Dont remember anyone finding
one here in 2 yrs so worth saving ! Bet there is only one for
every 50 XL100's or 100 Zenith flats.

looks like a t995 magnavox.decent sets as long as crt is good.they make a fine picture and fairly reliable

An Admiral for sure. The color ring logo a dead givaway.
Not my cup of tea. IF I found a SS console even I would
take that home ! I have no more excuse. I just bought my
squaw a new Caravan & could easily put 4 in it.......

Kamakiri 12-01-2016 02:09 PM

zeno 12-01-2016 04:24 PM
