Something VERY rare andINTERESTING -at the ETF this convention !

Well...there MAY just be something coming to the ETF..MORE interesting than a CT-100..or even an RR-359 !!

Something more RARE...than EITHER one of those sets !!

Something that..until NOW..was not even believed was still in existence..

Something that cost MORE..than an average HOUSE...when it was new !!

Something ...that only THREE..are believed were ever produced of it !!

NOT a kit...NOT a homebrew set. This is a commercial item..

POST WW_II.

NOT a mechanical color set. This is likely even RARER...than those !!

Let your minds wonder.....

Kamakiri 02-17-2016 07:15 PM

Okay Jack, more details or you're just funnin' us :D

rca2000 02-17-2016 07:20 PM

No this is NOT a hoax. This comes from VERY reliable sources..

Steve may have just happened on one of the RAREST tv sets out there..

Let me just say...when this set was new...it was something most people ONLY could "dream of"...

It weighs 900 POUNDS !!

stromberg6 02-17-2016 07:29 PM

Perhaps a tri-color theatre projection system? Or perhaps an Eidophor system?

rca2000 02-17-2016 07:44 PM

Likely RARER than an eidophor..or a tri-color..

I am NOT joking here people..Remember i AM on the board of the ETF.

rca2000 02-17-2016 07:49 PM

Adam 02-17-2016 08:05 PM

One of those early-60s Ampex color consoles with the built in video tape recorder?

Eric H 02-17-2016 08:05 PM

Oh, newer, what decade?

Eric H 02-17-2016 08:06 PM

900 pounds, could be one of those 10 foot long Curtis Mathis consoles. :D

Even those probably had more than three made though.

I just saw this thread. When I saw "weighs 900 pounds" I started thinking 60s desktop computer. Not that it would have been my guess.

reeferman 02-17-2016 11:20 PM

According to the CPI inflation calculator, $30,000 in 1963 is now equal to $232,369.61

truetone36 02-17-2016 11:41 PM

Hugh Hefner owned one of these, IIRC.

Eric H 02-18-2016 12:35 AM

Who made the TV? The controls look like Packard Bell?

rca2000 02-18-2016 01:31 AM

I originally figured these had a CTC 12..but Steve says it is NOT an RCA..maybe an S-C chassis?

sampson159 02-18-2016 07:53 AM

another holy grail.never saw one but read articles and heard stories.too actually see one would be like a dream.cant wait

Electronic M 02-18-2016 01:13 PM

Wow, I gotta see that set!

I'd love to own one of those someday.

SwizzyMan 02-18-2016 05:13 PM

That thing would probably fall through my wooden floors! 900 pounds!!

reeferman 02-18-2016 05:37 PM

It would be interesting to see that in the '63 Christmas catalog.
100# a foot for 900# seems unrealistic.

old_tv_nut 02-18-2016 08:29 PM

900 pounds shipping weight, perhaps?

But all that gear needs it's own power plant, and even miniature nuclear plants are heavy. :D

SwizzyMan 02-18-2016 09:16 PM

I would imagine it having multiple power supply chassis. Not to mention how many tubes the thing used. It also has another included feature, a space heater.:D

rca2000 02-18-2016 09:35 PM

I have been told the VTR is SS..probably NOT the audio amp though..or Tuner.

Telecruiser 02-18-2016 09:36 PM

I want to see that! One more reason to attend the ETF Convention!

reeferman 02-18-2016 09:46 PM

I still find 900# hard to believe.
Maybe we should request the Ohio D.O.T. bring a portable scale to the convention so it can be weighed.

rca2000 02-18-2016 09:49 PM

There is NO WAY...one could EVER...get that beast into a pickup truck in ANY way !! And it would take at least SIX MEN...to LIFT it !!

Eric H 02-19-2016 12:19 AM

I wonder if the camera was included in the weight.

And what's he doing anyway, checking her pores?

NewVista 02-19-2016 08:48 AM

What is brand of camera he is using?

Chip Chester 02-19-2016 10:01 AM

As far as transportation goes, one would hope that the wood cabinetry was not relied upon for protection/support of individual components in transit. The heavier components were probably removed and transported in their own cases/crates, making it easier to handle throughout the move process, and protecting them properly from transport shocks, which is the real potential killer. (Hence, the Ampex engineer required for re-assembly.) High weight + high G-shocks = bad news, every time.

Hopefully the current owners will take a similar approach for their cross-town/country trip. They could, of course, take an approach similar to that of most of the major TV companies of the day: Tack a handle on top and call it a portable.

Does it still have its engraved plaque and if so, what's on it?

Steve McVoy 02-24-2016 12:21 PM

A warning, though. It is not certain that it will be at the Convention. We are not even sure it will come to the museum.

rca2000 02-24-2016 12:22 PM

Hopefully we will see in late April !!

NewVista 02-24-2016 10:14 PM

Their consumer products were made in Elk Grove IL for lower production and shipping costs? vs producing/shipping from their Silicon Valley Calif HQ?

Their Pro gear was, of course, easy to work on, but some of their consumer products were a nightmare - I'm thinking of the 950 series hybrid ATRs - you didn't want to have to dismantle one - but you had to - because the rubber belts would melt & stick to the pulleys (they came out with an improved retrofit belt kit for dealers).

Eeek! that looks like a 950 audio tape recorder in there. Not to worry, just leave it in there as they are quite sharp looking in appearance.
