Find me a car!
Welp, I find myself in the market for a "play" vehicle. Got about $3,000 to spend on something neat :)
Prerequisites: 1. No vans, large pickups, or anything newer than 1985 or so. 2. Interior has to be decent, and it can't be a rot box. 3. If it's not driveable back to Buffalo, that's fine....but the transport would cut into my available funds for the purchase price. 4. Has to at least start. Moving under its own power is a plus, running and stopping is ideal. If I can hop in and drive it, awesome! If it's your car and you know that it ran, I'm good with that. 5. Has to be complete. Nothing without an engine/trans unless it's something obtainable somewhat easily. If you post a link to something, please let it be something in your local area that you'd be willing to go look at for me. Or, maybe someone here has something that would fit the bill that needs a new home :) |
Interested in my 72 Buick? … sending PM

I'm looking for more of a driver, something that I don't have to worry if it rains on it or I can take for a spin at Christmastime if I want to. And that car deserves better.....

"1. No vans, large pickups, or anything newer than 1985 or so."
I guess that eliminates my '88 S10 with 100,100 miles. |
Any preferences, like unique, foreign, domestic, muscle, etc?
|
Too bad this is a '93, too new for you. It would have hauled the big stuff.

Well, sometimes things happen quicker than expected! I just bought a 1962 Mercury Meteor with a V8 out of Muncie IN. Runs, drives, and stops :thmbsp:
So excited!! :yippy: |
Dig those space age tail lamps! Looks like you picked a winner. :thmbsp:

Now you just need a TV hauler to replace the van. |
No, not really. The guy I sold the van to is my buddy Ed....the guy I was at ETF with. He's got at least 200 sets.
I'm smart :D |
289's were not available til '65. 170 six, 221 V8 or 260 V8
|
Yep, this one has the 221. Supposed to be picked up by the transport company today :)

Been a little bit, so wanted to update the thread. The car is, of course here :)
A little more work than I anticipated in some areas, but less in others.....just like any ebay car purchase. |

First thing to address was the floors. On the plus side, it seems to have rusted from the inside out....the car was originally equipped with a rubber floor mat (which was under the carpet) that didn't do it any favors. It's surprisingly solid except in the front, which I expected.
From here, it's scrape, wire brush, vacuum, scrape, wire brush, vacuum....then fire up the compressor and cut out the damaged driver's side. I plan to have this floor completely done within a week. The exhaust was rotted from the axle back, so I bent a new section over the axle and installed a Thrush glass pack. She sounds pretty mean :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdDG...ature=youtu.be |
Sounds great!!

I love that period (1972) bumper sticker. Looks like a great car! Love the styling.

I had a '65 Ford Econoline van with a 170 six, a real gut-less job, but fair on fuel. It could have been worse, as Ford made a 144 cu six, unless they quit using it that year. :scratch2: |

Good times. |
I agree with mstanton about the 289 not coming out until '65.
If you wanted an 8 on the '64 1/2 mustangs, comet, or falcons, you got the 260. My beloved Comet had the 260- what a sweet little engine. Not fast off the line, but great overall performer. I remember on senior skip-day I raced one of my closest friends who had a '68 or '69 Skylark with a 350. He left me in the dust, but the Comet didn't give up, kept getting closer and closer, then finally passed him at 117 mph. I still remember his face as I passed- priceless! |
Loved those SB Fords
I had a '68 Mustang with the 289-2V. Best V8 on gas I ever had. Had to start real slow when it was wet out. That automatic would start out in 2nd gear if downshifted from Drive.
It did run out of breath at higher speed yet kept going. I had a friend with a 260 in a '64 Comet back in high school, I recall it being a fun ride and it could lay rubber by speed shifting the C4 cruise-O-matic trans. |

Ten weeks from a barn in Indiana to on the road!
You'd never know there were rust holes in the right rear door and quarter big enough to slide your fist through. Ironically, I did the initial metal work on them with patches made from the picture tube shield off a delta gun tube :D Twenty miles under her belt now, and so far so good!! |
Nice work! :thmbsp:
|
You know, during casual conversation with Justin (OS X) at the convention I said, sure, I'd sell the Mercury. Little did I know that he was serious, and today he drove it home....
And so the hunt begins anew :D |
Re-load! :D

What you really need is an Edsel. https://buffalo.craigslist.org/cto/6119802729.html

The $1,200 wagon will haul more TVs...

I had two '59 Edsels about a quarter century ago. Ugly damn things!
