I was given this CBS tv tonight, Just the chassis. The back was discarded so I don't know the model number. Any idea what the model number is?

jr_tech 08-28-2019 08:48 PM

The Stratford looks close.

Got to cleaning it a bit and looking it over today.

Tom9589 08-29-2019 07:07 PM

Sorry to see that brightener on the CRT.

static1701 08-29-2019 08:29 PM

yea, but I have a rejuvenator and maybe it can be restored to not need the booster. I am on the fence about bringing up the power slowly and see what it will do or just start replacing caps first.

static1701 08-29-2019 08:51 PM

The print for the 5C603 does not look like my tv, everything is on one board in that print. It does look close from the front but no the back. Still trying to figure out the correct model number so I can get a print for it.

I never saw one with that chassis layout. The ones I worked on had the upright chassis that tilted down to work on.
Their last sets were strange designs, to be sure. :thumbsdn:

Electronic M 08-29-2019 10:31 PM

Not sure why you'd want to restore the chassis when there is no cabinet or faceplate...It doesn't have a chrome chassis like some Radio Craftsmen and Scott sets.

When a Cabinet is junk and the chassis ain't shiny, I typically put it into the parts chassis pile (or line up a new cabinet).

What is the screen size of your set... the 603 is 24 inch, perhaps there is a similarly styled 21 inch model?
Not much help here, as there are few pictures:

Mine is a 21 inch, the picture tube is a Rogers 21ALP4A

static1701 08-30-2019 10:51 PM

I like the open chassis look, just going to keep it on a shelf in my garage.

There is technically nothing wrong with restoring a chassis only. It's educational, challenging, and visually stimulating to look at all the naked parts.:D

I have an RCA Secure-vision for the purpose. Possibly the last CRT set with the RCA badging. Built-in DTV tuner. :thmbsp:

I would be somewhat worried about the implosion hazzard of an unprotected 21 inch jug.

I was worried about that on the drive home, no problem at home... No one will mess with it.

Electronic M 09-01-2019 08:09 PM

At least one member here has had a CRT in a unplugged console in a vacant room spontaneously implode...odds are it won't happen, but you probably have better odds of seeing it randomly implode than you do winning the lottery...

Tim Tress 09-02-2019 07:44 AM

So, you are in Canada, then? It might be a lot different than the U.S. version.

In the Oelrich publications service invoice books, on one of the duplicate pages there was some kind of a release page, that the customer was supposed to sign removing the servicer from the liability of the CRT, in case of implosion. That was at the time of CRT replacement. :scratch2:
I never made one out, as it was some form of legalese???. :sigh:

old_coot88 09-02-2019 03:36 PM

In 30+ years in the TV service/repair trade, I never once ever had a CRT implode, either spontaneously or from handling.

Agreed. Highly unlikely.

static1701 09-02-2019 08:11 PM

I can't find the correct service manual for it, the one that has the correct picture on the front page does not have the correct chassis. I will have some time tomorrow and I am going to try and bring up the power slowly and see if it does anything at all. Also put the picture tube on the tester and see how it tests. If the CRT and Flyback are ok, I will start replacing all the caps and see how it goes. Would be nice to have the print for it, but I should still be able to get it going without it.

static1701 09-03-2019 01:00 PM

The tuner and the sound work, tuned to ch10 (My analog transmitter)
No high voltage at all. All tubes are good. Picture tube tests good, don't know why they had a booster on it, but it does not need it. While I know that old caps should be replaced, I figured I would try the reforming thing just to see what I have. I am having second thoughts of working on this without the print for it. Some of the parts are hard to identify and I don't know the test points.

Tim Tress 09-04-2019 07:58 PM

With the old caps still in there, the chances of it working as-is are pretty slim. I would check all of the components in the horizontal output, oscillator, and high voltage sections to start. Do you have any test equipment? A case like this is when having an oscilloscope and B&K or Sencore analyst is a big time saver.

If it is a Canadian model, you might be able to get the service data from Just Radios.

static1701 09-05-2019 01:42 PM

I checked the voltage on the cathode of the damper and it was zero. Voltage on the screen of the Horz output was 67 This thing has a few resistors that are corroded and test open. One says "11" on it and the rest are unreadable. I guess I will just keep up the quest for the print. I will check with Just Radios.

static1701 09-05-2019 01:55 PM

I have also look at all the Beitman manuals I could find with no luck. The tubes in this set are: 12BH7A,3CB6,12BY7,3BY6,3CB6,3CB6,3BN6,4BQ7A,5J6,12 AX4,12BQ6,5AN8,12L6,6SN7,1B3GT, and 21ALP4A I think Sams 317-3 my have what I need. I am trying to find one without having to order it (I would order it if I knew for sure that it was the right one)

Tim 09-07-2019 03:31 PM

I checked Sams 317-3 and the tube complement is somewhat different.

static1701 09-07-2019 08:10 PM

Thank you, I found a list of tv's that CBS-Columbia made in the 50's. I am looking at each one on the Sam's site (you get the front page picture) when I find the correct pic, I will see about ordering that print. Thank you for checking 317-3

That might not be an effective way to find it. The cover picture on the Sams is usually only one cabinet style of many sets that share the same chassis within the folder.

Also there are a lot of places to get a Photofact, the Sams website is far from the cheapest.

Ask here in the classifieds first.

.

static1701 09-07-2019 08:47 PM

Tim, would you have access to look at the following Sam's: 292-3, 304-2, 321-3, 334-2, 338-2 From the list i have, they and 317-3 cover all 1956 models. The reason I think it is 1956 is the picture for the 5C603 is the set I have but the 5C603 is a 24" set and mine is a 21" information I find for that does not have the correct chassis. Nothing that I have looked at has been correct so far.

EdKozk2 09-07-2019 09:24 PM

Are you sure about that 5J6 mixer tube in the tuner? The 4BQ7 is a standard cascode RF amp. I looked through most of those Sam's folder's you listed and 334-2 comes closest so far. Your three piece chassis is what's strange. I'm looking through my Rider's currently.
Ed

static1701 09-07-2019 09:34 PM

Yes, it is a 5J6, I pulled all the tubes the other day and tested them. That three piece chassis is really strange.. in all the prints I have looked at I can't find it anywhere. Thank you again for trying to find this...

EdKozk2 09-07-2019 10:17 PM

I did find a tuner in Riders 16-3 for CBS - Columbia which uses six volt filament tubes, 6BQ7 and a 6J6. Now to try and find a set with a 6BY6 / 3BY6 in it.

static1701 09-08-2019 07:05 PM

199-4 is a few years older but I wonder if they re-used the cabinet design. Does any one have this one to take a look? I was thinking it was 21T11, but I found Some info for that chassis in a beitman and it does not look like that is it. I found an Air King TV that looks like the tv I have.. (It is not the right chassis) but it does look like air king made tv's for CBS-Columbia. Getting closer :)

Tim 09-08-2019 08:44 PM

Yes, I can check those Sams but I am out of town until Thursday.

EdKozk2 09-09-2019 01:01 AM

I looked in folder 199-4 , it's not right . I looked at all the Sam's 300 through 354 and found nothing that matches you tube compliment. Also checked 292. I found nothing in the Riders either. Have you been able to find any chassis numbers on the tuner or main chassis ? If you set was assembled in Canada, the schematic may not have been published in the states.
Ed

static1701 09-09-2019 08:20 PM

Thanks for looking, I checked over every inch on the chassis and did not find any numbers... printed or stamped. Looked at the bottom side of the wooden bottom too. Could have come from Canada, my area is a half hour drive away from Windsor.

Tim 09-09-2019 08:24 PM

What about part numbers on any transformers, yoke, flyback?

Tim 09-09-2019 08:27 PM

There is a fellow that posts over on ARF that he has Canadian TV service data. You might try posting your question over there.
