Greystoke is suddenly spamming everywhere on the site.


Are mods or Admin paying attention?

I reported one of his threads yesterday and don't know if anyone even read my report message.

They really ought to give me or SOMEONE who actually reads posts here daily, moderator status so someone can fix it faster than the mostly absentee mods here now...

Do you think it would do any good to mention this on AK - maybe they have some contact with whoever should be paying attention here?

I've tossed my hat into the volunteer moderator circle several times and will continue to do so, if you want a daily visitor moderator/janitor who's membership goes back over 20 years with audiokarma I'm available. Trash will be taken out daily if needed.

This is getting tiring. No doubt there are some among us with the skill to track this person down and make their "life" digitally miserable.

To me, nothing about this tiresome Tarzan garbage makes any sense whatsoever, it's like 6 x 9 = 42, the answers given just doesn't fit right with the questions, or explanations given.

The best way you can apologize to the forum is by deleting your poor taste posts and grow up.

I searched but could not find a way to delete a post - please let me know if there is a way and I absolutely will delete every one of them.

The best I could figure to do is edit all posts to "Post not Helpful". I also changed all titles to "Please Ignore" but the post still display the original titles in the threads list. If anyone know how to change that, again, I'm glad to do it.

I would be glad to pay for an admin's time to delete the posts - I'm truly sorry and want to make it right but don't know what else I can do at this time.

How about an honest explanation as to WHY the bad taste posts were made. You made the first move disrespecting the forum so I believe you owe the explanation, we're all human and do stupid things... I've done my share and then some but they all come with a responsibility and this is where the truth comes out.

The explanation I gave in the thread "An Explanation but not an Excuse" thread here in the Site News forum is 100% true. That's not to say there aren't other factors that played into my "snap" but - everyone here is dealing with their own unique challenges and issues - mine are no more than anyone else's and absolutely no excuse.

The short of it is, I emailed and prvt messaged requests to delete my account but after 2 months of no response, I made a childish attempt to get my account deleted. On every forum I can think of, when someone posted crap, they got banned - and that's what I thought would happen quickly to me. It was stupid, it was childish and it's embarrassing - and I wish like anything I could make it right and clean it up. I've never done this before an will never again.

I've emailed the admin to explain and ask how I can clean this up and make it right and hope to hear from him soon. That's not meant to be a dig at the admin - I now understand he's juggling multiple sites and has more than a full plate.

I'm truly sorry guys - I'm also embarrassed and feel like an idiot.

So why did you want your account deleted? Just sitting inactive is really no different as far as the world is concerned and on the flip side of that hanging around and maybe picking up some knowledge isn't such a bad thing. I've been working with this stuff for nearly 50 years and yet I still pick up some morsel most every day, there are times when I do have something to share that helps someone with their A-HA! moment so as I see it this is a win-win all around.

I also get the "snap" thing in life and have been "on the wagon" now for over 20 years, addictions suck so doing my old tech projects keeps me centered in life.

Right now the site is a little understaffed so we do what we can to keep the lights on and it all comes down to respect. You're welcome to join in the conversations but please do keep things respectful and at least Rated-PG for the next generations that might be checking out the forums with their elders, nothing more difficult for a parent or grandparent than having something Rated-R or in bad taste come up when cruising the forums with the kids in the copilot seat.

I get your point and tend to agree but something else happened that resulted in me going all OCD on securing/closing anything I didn't need right now. I was slowly shrinking my digital footprint since retiring a few years ago but several months ago, my main e-mail account was flooded with over 1,000 messages from all kinds of random sites - many asking me to "confirm my subscription" and such. My mind instantly went to "I'm being hacked" which sent me racing down a digital rabbit hole with anxiety in the red zone.

I don't want any of this to sound like making excuses - not my intent. Before retiring, I was in the IT field for 40+ years and saw the havoc that can be wreaked from hacked accounts and that surely played into all this - but is absolutely no excuse for my mess.

Very long story cut short, none of this justifies or excuses anything. I just hope to make it right. And I hate that y'all have had to deal with it - I honestly thought it would get my account banned and posts deleted quickly and everything back to normal for y'all.

Absolutely - I sent a message to the admin Saturday about all this and offered to donate to the site/pay his time and am waiting to hear back.

I'd like to specify that a donation goes to VideoKarma, if possible, but I don't see a way to do it through that link. Searching AudioKarma, it appears donations to AK and VK are combined into one pot. That's fine - they share the same server and the same admin/owner - but I'm hoping to "pay restitution" toward returning to normal here as quick as possible.

It really shouldn't take them a long time, though. One single account posting less than 5 things a day is perhaps the easiest form of spam to deal with there is, and on a properly moderated forum he would have been banned on day one. Obviously I am not excusing Greystroke here, but I think his ability to continue posting for so long has exposed this site as being extremely vulnerable to attack due to complete moderator absenteeism. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say a sufficiently motivated (and more actively malicious) person could bring down the whole forum or render it completely unusable in a matter of minutes.

It is extremely frustrating to me that there is a constant "please give us money" message at the top of a forum completely abandoned by its moderators, who will not transfer moderation powers to those actively volunteering to do so, and who in the first place took weeks to restore the site after it had finally been taken offline by crawler attacks (which had actually been affecting the uptime of the site for months beforehand). Apparently, they're not even bothering to cash checks people are sending in according to user teevee!! Greystroke inadvertently became a pentester for the forum, and it failed in a big way. I need to see if there is a way to locally back up this site because I don't think it's going to last much longer under current ownership.

I'd say grab what you can because you're right, Videokarma is not going to be around much longer at this rate. Too bad really but until the powers that be decide to do something nothing is going to happen. My membership started when it was still only the original audiokarma.org going back over 20 years now and I was more active there after the split simply because I wasn't doing much with old TV's, what I can tell ya is the old TV side of things really slowed after the split and has never really caught on... this archaic BBS interface has done nothing to help and with Cloudflare getting in the way it appears to be in a graveyard spiral.

It's all his parents fault. They didn't beat the $#!+ out of him when he was a bad little boy. And he got away with all kinds of...crap.

I'm not an advocate to hitting anyone or anything but actions do have consequences.

I'm an advocate for having him nibbled to death by an okapi...
