Picked this one out of the shop today. It is rather complete set. It will need a new CRT. :scratch2: The flyback is toast!

looks like you'd be better off using this one for parts. lots of internal damage

besides you may put all those parts in the set and find some part broken which you cant get

I was a freebie. I could not turn it down. It is pretty hammered though. I put together a CTC 15 that was in worse shape than this set. I just got the new flyback and will have my CTC 15 frankenset running soon again.

I have that same model Sylvania roundie. Mine has a pretty good picture but I lucked out as it had a black-matrix tube installed in the late 70's

Bad cosmetics do not always mean bad problems...I have a Zenith which had been left outside for years...crt bad. I constructed a new cabinet and installed new CRT and the chassis worked fine.
Cabinet on this one looks solid...it's certainly not a lost cause, just will take a little work.

How can you be so sure until you get her fired-up?

Too bad that crt is busted, it looks like it was a good quality RCA replacement.

I do not know why the shop always busted the CRts. I am going to get the safety glass off of it. There are a few more roundies in the shop. I will be posting more pics soon. One is a real nice CTC 16. it is missing the tuner. My roundie collection will be getting a boost from this. Most of this stuff was buried under 30 plus years of junk. Most of the sets are mising parts because they were used to fix other sets. Still today they do not use new parts to fix a set. Too expensive I would guess.

Rough, but a Sylvania, that makes for a novelty. Could use just the exterior trim to construct "Frankenset II" with another cabinet, crt, chassis...btw, I've been anxious to see "Frankenset I" come back to life!

Frankenset 1 is on the menu for this week. Hope to be posting some pictures soon. If I get that CTC 15 chassis on ebay then I am really be in business.

I am making progress on the Sylvania. I got all the junk stripped off the cabinet. I had to install a new strip of trim at the top of the front. Put two 3" wide strips of wood on the bottom to hold the legs. Glued may of the joints again and added screws to stiffen up the joints. Home Depot only had Birch or Red Oak sheets. I went and picked the best Oak I could find. Think the man was getting pissed that I had all those sheets of wood standing on end. Needed to do that to pick the best grain. Bought some Red Mahogany stain and some modern varnish. Next I will have to strip the front of the old stain. Think I have a flyback coming. Once I get that I will start the electronic part. I have a CRT that is weak. I will put a brightener on it to see how it does.

Waiting to see how Blue Lateral makes out with Hawkeye on the CRT rebuild. I have one that the filament will not light up. It has not gone to air and is rebuildable.

Looks like it's coming along pretty good! Too bad you're not in my area. I could hook you up with my Sylavania Roundie. I'm still not sure if I want to hold on to it or not. It's not in horrible shape, but not the best either. I've got some tunar trouble. Color sync goes out once in awhile, but when it's in sync it has a fantastic picture. The sharpest of any roundie I've seen.....

resolder the heater pins before you give up.

I had tossed a Sylvania roundie like that one right before you came to Texas. The insides were dirty, but a little better shape than that one. It had a 21FKP22 that was weak. The cabinet was pretty bad.

Keep us posted with photos of your cabinet work. I have one that I am thinking about stripping down to the skeleton as well.

You're going to reskin that with new wood??!

Got the two sides of the set done. I will have the top on this week. On the bottom you can see the new solid wood strips to replace the particle board. The legs would not stay on the set because the particle board got wet and fell apart. It is all coming along reay well.

Still working on this set. Got the top of the set on finally. I spent the day stripping and sanding it down. It is pretty much ready for stain and varnish. I got some matte finish stuff to top it off. This week I may take the face plate to the auto hobby shop on post to sandblast. Then I will take it to be painted. A lot of work but I think it is worth it to save the set.

Cuttin the grass will happen tomorrow. I just could not make myself to do it today. Too much like work on my day off. :D

That is the model I want but with the base model's metal cabinet with legs.

Damn and I was thinking slapping on new top veneer on my RCA ctc-10 is going to be a lot of work...

I finally got around to staining the cabinet. I picked Walnut because it would be dark. The walnut did not get as dark as I would have liked. I think that the paper thin veneer was the cause of this. I should have stuck with the Mahogany plan. Too late to change now. Still looks good though. After the stain dries I will then put on the top coat. After that I will remove the legs and give them some attention.

Wow! - Looks great polaraman! Can't wait to see this with the television in it! Speaking of which, have you gotten the electronics working? The tube that came with this set looked like it might have been a bit weak... :)

But seriously, nice work - you're definitely more adept at the woodworking aspects of television repair than I. Keep up the good work!

I have yet to tackle the electronics. I have a useable CRT for the project. I just won a Sylvania roundie chassis off Ebay. Hopefully between the two chassis I will be able to make one work.

I forgot to add that I have the faceplate almost ready to paint. Home Depot had a really good selection of paint.

I am almost done with the cabinet. I went to Lowes and bought some 8" legs and stained them to match the cabinet. I used a sand blaster to blast the faceplate. It is in primer ready for paint. I may do that this weekend. I got the chassis today that I bought off Ebay. The chassis cost $1.99 and $26.00 to ship. It is a dead ringer for my Sylvania chassis. It is in way better shape. The plastic surrounds on the tube sockets are all there. I would have had to replace 5 or more sockets on the other chassis. The flyback on this one looks good also. I may have it going soon! :banana2:

I'm curious as to how you're going to repaint the mask. Will you go for the multi colored original look, with the various gold/biege and silver?

I am going to multi-color the mask. I bought some semi gloss brown and silver metallic paint. I actually have two colors of silver. I am going to test both. Then I will decide on which to use. Brown was the color of the paint on the mask. Plus, the gold for the square around the silver.

I am putting together an order for caps and some grill cloth from AES. The grill cloth will be the crowning touch.

It really has been fun. I can't wait till it shows a picture.

Another Note: I found a guy that is selling veneer. If I had to do over, I would Mahogany veneer the set. The veneer on it now is oak. Mahogany is just a favorite of mine. I bought some mahogany and maple veneer from him. I have a radio or two that needs a new mahogany skin.

Being able to find a mint '65 chassis and have it delivered to your door for 27.99!
I know you are a great guy and deserve it but so am I and I never have that kind of luck!
I am very glad you are trying to match paint properly. I think art supply companies have a better selection of non or low-metallic colors with matte or low gloss finishes, etc.

I don't think that guy on ebay who sold the chassis is bragging to all his buddies what a kill he made on that chassis, even the auction probably cost him more than that!

I tried asking the seller if he had the rest of the set. He would not answer the question. The tag on the chassis is from a replacement CRT. (RE21FJP22)
I am going to email him back to see if he has the CRT. Even if the rare earth crt is a dud it will be worth rebuilding.

At least the seller did not toss the chassis in the trash. Most un-knowing folks would have done that. I am very happy to have it.

P-Man, that looks remarkably like the chassis from my Sylvania rectie. I thnk I only had to replace FOUR tube sockets, though!

I am painting the faceplate. I already have the silver inner painted and just sprayed the gold outer ring. I am using Plasti-kote Classic Metals paint. There no name of the color on the can. I guess the cap is the tip off. What if somebody switches caps? :no: I got it at Michaels craft store. It is really coming out nice. All that is left is to paint the outer brown color. I will then mount it in the cabinet. I have a CRT waiting to be installed.

The new grill cloth and lytics are coming from Antique radio. The picture is the grill cloth that I am considering using.
