Nice!

That's the RCA CTC-5 "Lockhaven" Super series model with the limed oak finish. Nice example. And the owner's manual and hang tag are a great bonus. Go for it Polaraman.

Catalog picture of it in Mahogany with model features and dimensions in the CTC-5 section of my site.

I put in a bid on it. I do not know if the shrill bidder on the Zenith roundie will show up. I do not have an early color set in my collection. I have an empty CTC 5 Wingate cabinet. I will see how it goes. The seller is willing to ship.

Another set in Omaha??? What the hell?? Don't worry Rich, I will NOT bid against you on this. However you need to come to Omaha and get it, so you can pick up some of MY stuff! LOL!! As for the seller... I'm sure he's on the "up and up" as I'm certain it's the dude who collects washers and the one who came across the early remote set that he had in another posting here.

rca2000 06-21-2005 08:26 PM

Sorry, but I want it too. But I most likely will NOT end up getting it. I have wanted a '5 for a loooonnnngggg time now.

veg-o-matic 06-21-2005 09:22 PM

Yup, the seller's a Good Guy.

frenchy 06-21-2005 10:27 PM

Damn, was this set ever even turned ON once?? What a beaut...

Eric H 06-21-2005 10:35 PM

Is this the same model that's at Graceland?

gansky1 06-22-2005 12:03 AM

Hey guys, the RCA is my find from the weekend. I have 30+ major appliances on the property in addition to the RCA I brought home a couple of weeks ago that I'm keeping so I have to make some choices. Maybe I should throw in a vintage Maytag with the TV! If you have any questions about the set, email me for quickest response - 65 washer fans coming in this week for a convention so I won't be online a lot.

Take care everyone - Greg

I have to say, these early color roundies are beautiful sets. And this is a fine example of beauty.

Although the cabinet is in good condition, it doesn't impress me all that much as operation of the set. I know a lady at work who has a 20s-30s console AM and shortwave radio. She keeps the cabinet immaculate, but the radio doesn't work (probably needs a recapping and it'll be up and running in no time) Don't get me wrong though, I definately want a nice cabinet, but I want picture perfect operation from the set, whether radio or TV. I have an RCA 95T5 tabletop prewar AM radio and the chassis looks beautiful, and the radio sounds better than any modern AM radio I've ever used, since I've restored it. I still have to refinish the cabinet.

I hope this set gets a loving home and a loving restorer that gets this set operating as good as it looks.

Me want.

Telecolor 3007 06-27-2005 07:37 AM

The wooden case is in very good shape. I must check if inside looks good to!

polaraman 06-28-2005 03:54 PM

Did any of us get the set? I lost by $5.00! I am ready for the next one to pop up though!!!!

I think the buyer bought from me before. They use old TV's for movies. He bought a 1972 silvertone in mint working condition. It was supposed to be used in some movie about nixon and watergate. I did ship it to some studio in hollywood. I then got an email offering me back the chassis as they had to "improve it" with a new TV in its cabinet. Hopefully this set doest get hacked up with a trinitron.

BTW, its rather ironic that this set sold for exactly the same amount as that zenith roundie in Iowa!

polaraman 06-28-2005 05:46 PM

They would be really STUPID to part this set!

Steve D. 06-28-2005 06:46 PM

It's just a business.....

Polaraman,

Sorry you lost the set. For the $5.00 difference it should have gone to a collector. As for parting it out or gutting it being stupid, these prop houses are in business to rent a period piece of furniture. In other words, they could care less if the insides of the set are working. They'll gut it and put in a new color set if the tv has to be in operating condition. If it 's only a static non-working set that is just "set dressing" it might survive intact. These rental houses don't have the time, expertise or money to invest in restoring this set to operating condition. If the script calls for a working vintage color tv and the 50 year old restored chassis craps out in the middle of a take, the producer and director and an entire crew aren't going to wait around for someone to fix it.
You get my point. I would have thought this clean set would have gone for more. The prop house will get back it's $405.00 + shipping by charging a hefty rental and insurance fee. I'm sorry that $5.00 was the difference between that RCA sitting in a loving collector's home and gathering dust in some wharehouse between being trucked from studio to studio.

the winner inquired about some sets I had available. He was after the CTC-16L that I picked up in Little Rock. I'm glad I outbid him!

drh4683 06-28-2005 07:48 PM

Steve D is correct all the way.

After the buyer won the auction, I got an email explaining what movie it was to be in and to look out for it. That never happend...

After the email offering the chassis back for free+shipping I went off on him. I was polite but wanted to know why he had to destroy such a mint TV with all its papers.

His responce was exactly what steve said. It would cost too much to take a risk of the set breaking down durring a take.

I had too many sets then thats why it went on ebay. If I had know that was what was going to happen, I would have certianly kept it.

Maybe you can email the buyer and ask what his plans are for the set. If however and hopefully not they decide to part out the chassis and CRT he will probably give it away.

If the zenith roundie goes back up, I will bid on it to save it from destruction of prop suppliers!

Steve Hoffman 06-28-2005 08:08 PM

You know, I would have bid on that TV but I thought one of you guys wanted it. Geez, it went for piddle money and it will soon cease to exist in its original form.

It went for not much; I've spent more on a dinner. Sigh.

Too bad.

Ask the buyer for the chassis, try to deal with him to overtake the set after using it for the movie / film or offer him the possibility to fix this old marvel. There are many possibilities to do. You have nothing to lost, you can only win.

bgadow 06-29-2005 12:06 PM

at the very least, someone needs to save that crt. but on second thought, we can't let that chassis go in the trash, either!

Chad Hauris 06-29-2005 12:28 PM

What about emailing the seller of the set...if the prop house just wants to gut the set, could the seller perhaps remove the chasssis and crt and just ship the cabinet and knobs...would save on the shipping charges for the seller to just sent the buyer the empty cabinet, if they would agree to it.

polaraman 06-29-2005 03:02 PM

I emailed the buyer after the auction and asked what the plans were for the set. I am waiting a reply.

yagosaga 06-29-2005 03:51 PM

It is a sin to destroy such a nice set. If the seller would install a modern chassis with a modern crt - he should keep the original parts and he should do it in such a way that somebody else could easily restore the set into the original condition. This can't be so difficult?!
It is true, whatever is destroyed nobody can't bring back forever. This is what we have learned from the desaster of WW2.
A human being before the court has a lawyer per law. An antique tv set has no lawyer if somebody of us makes himself a lawyer for a set.

Steve D. 06-29-2005 04:24 PM

Doug,

I wasn't ever planning on bidding on the RCA. But beyond that beautiful set was the included paper work. I have an original owner's manual for my CTC-5 Deluxe and would have loved to have that original "hang tag". I was going to write you and request a color copy of the tag. I guess I should have done that at the time. Did you perhaps make a copy of the tag?

jstout66 06-29-2005 07:16 PM

I've met the seller of the set and saw the set last week-end. The guy that has it now is pretty cool, but tv's aren't really "his thing". He does collect and has many awesome washers and appliances, so if it was certain that this set would be scrapped I wouldn't imagine he'd be too happy about it, as he has much appreciation for vintage items.

bgadow 06-30-2005 08:27 AM

Funny, I was also going to ask for a copy of that paperwork! I knew that if one of "us" got it, it wouldn't be much of a problem.
