Free old TVs and CRTs in Charlotte, NC
 

I have been contacted by a guy in Charlotte, NC who has a basement full of old TVs that he would like to give away.

His grandfather ran a RCA dealership in Charlotte for 50 years. These TVs are what remains. Most are RCA, but not all. They also have a dozen brand new picture tubes.

Whoever takes them must pick them up -- and take everything.

He does not have a list of model numbers. He says that his grandfather used to have hundreds of these. Most are consoles.

I would go and take a look at them, but Charlotte is a 3,000 mile drive from here.

There are 12 televisions on my truck. 11 in the bed and one in the cab. There are 3 CRTs in the cab.

I was out on the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour last night. I was helping a man on the tour fix a right front wheel bearing on his 76 Aspen wagon. He drove on it till it melted to the spindle. Had to replace the whole thing last night. We were lucky to find a local Chevy guy that knew another person who knew a MOPAR guy with the correct parts. Try finding a spindle for a 76 Aspen at 8PM on a Tuesday. :no: SO! The televisions are still on the back of my truck!!!!

If you've bitten of more than you can chew, or if you just don't want the Capehart, I sure could find a nice home for it. Looks like a CX-33 chassis and a 20-inch crt. I'm not sure of the cabinet style, but if you give me a model number I could get more info to you. I have a lot of original documents for the set that might help you to restore it, if that's where you're going with it. Regardless, let me know what you do with it. Please don't chop-shop it for parts. Thanks.

The Capehart is Model 320. It would be in the CX-33 series of chassis. It would be SAMS 112-3. That would put the set about 1950/51. SAMS says that it is Capehart/Dumont. Is this a Dumont chassis?

DuMont may have placed some Capehart CX-33s in some of their cabinets, but you have a Capehart cabinet and a Capehart Chassis. Nothing DuMont about it IMHO.

Just curious, I have a Sams 112-3 in front of me, I don't see the reference to DuMont. Where is it?

Somewhere on your chassis you'll see printed CX33-"n", where "n" is a 1 thru 5. There were 5 production runs, with subtle variations. Sams 112-3 is sort of a conglomeration of all 5 and may or may not be exactly consistent with your set. So don't take it completely as gospel.

There's a 320 like yours in the Philo T Farnsworth museum in Indiana. That's the only other one I've seen. I'm very new to this forum though, and I've seen more Capeharts here in the last month than anywhere else (outside of the museum). I'm really hoping to find a round-screen Capehart, like the 334, at some point. Anyone out there know of one?

I did a SAMS search on their web page for the SAMS number. It said Capehart/Dumont and the sams number.

We were just talking in another thread about what became of the DuMont name when Emerson was done with it-maybe it ended up in the same hands as Capehart (in the 70s, I'd say) and now Sams lists them together? Kinda like how all the old Motorola stuff is now under Quasar. Just a thought.

Here is a pic of the RCA T-121 that I got. The cabinet is shaped like a T-100 but it is much larger. This set has a 12" CRT and not a 10BP4 like the T-100. The safety glass is broken. Anybody got another to spare?

Load number two of the TV stuff. The picture tubes are new in the box 21AMP4. I will get detailed pictures later. I have one more load to get. The Hallicrafters in the front right has a color compatible plug on it. I posted the picture if the tag and socket on the Admiral color compaitble thread.

every time i see that truck its loaded to the hilt with old tvs and such! Maybe if i get one ill start finding Old electronic equiptment my the truckload.....can't fit too much in my Saturn and my 4 cyl S10 barely moves with a load of trash in the back, nevermind 200lb TVs

I began to break down the really bad televisions I got. Some of them had busted picture tubes and water damaged cabinets. I will save the wood from the good parts. I can possibly refurbish a few table top Tv sets with that wood.

The saved chassis are going with me to the car wash. The mice have been all over them. I will spray them down and store them for future use.

Picture Number two! I hope the trash man did not party this weekend! I have about that much more to toss out there.

Any (good) 21EP4s hiding in there?

I got a 21ALP4 in the mess. It does not cross over to your CRT though. Most of the salvaged televisions that did not have the CRT busted were 17". I needed a few 17BP4 for a couple projects.

Got a good 9Qp4 for a future GE project. It has the replacement sticker on the CRT socket.

The lone(needed real bad) 21FP4 is not good. Well it is intact and rebuildable. Will keep looking for a replacement.

I did the same thing back about 20 years ago; cleaned out a long-since-retired RCA technician's cellar. The deal: All his test equipment--including several magnificent Tek scopes--I could take, proveded I cleaned out all the television sets as well.

The mean age of the sets was a lot later than in the cache you encountered. There were numerous roundie color sets, and a lot of portables and table models.

And--unbeknownst to the aging tech, who for years hadn't been well enough to go down into his cellar--the whole lot had been flooded. You could see the high water mark--well above everything that mattered. Except for a (IRRC) B&K "flying spot" video test pattern generator the rest was a loss. I still have the Tek scopes, and may try to get one of them working some day when I feel so ambitious. :sigh:

You guys do realize this thread is about a year and a half old? :scratch2:
