hey tim, nice score on the ct-100,gee,bummer about the tube have the usual white flaking..let me know if you need help on the chassis!!
since i am bored again and waiting the status of a 21axp22..
and have been working on this ctc-5 chassis.. soo.. i rolled over
a 21fb22 on the garage floor and decided to check this ctc-5 chassis out,i am amazed i got color!!.. kinda dangerous how i got it hooked up.. but for testing i was so curious...
after about 30 mins of running the fly starts to sizzle and wax comes out..not sure if it has corroded and shorted turns..

Terry,

It is important to measure the HOT cathode current and set it with the H. Drive control to proper spec. This chassis is bad for takling out flybacks I've been told because of excess HOT plate current.

Eric H 08-31-2003 07:12 PM

Geez, I can't get any color out of my 7 to save my life!

I have a used Fly that's supposed to be for a for a 5 if you want it.

i measured the current,210 ma,but the adjusment slug is seized in place..guess i will have to drill it out or try moyer for a new one..(linearity coil the manual tells you to adjust for lowest current)
terry

Carmine 09-01-2003 06:18 PM

Try some PB Blaster to free-up anything that's siezed. Works wonders on car stuff.

Eric H 09-02-2003 07:36 PM

You might try heating the slug with a soldering iron and see if it will move.

ctc-5

hey guys,I have been trying to iron out a problem with the H-osc going wild in the ctc-5 chassis..was perfect rock steady for awhile, then slowly started to drift and go way off freq..
and guess what i found?
one of those mica caps..!! 82mmfd.. (or .000082uf).
there are like 3 of various values..
so what would you replace them with? i am having a hard time finding these values..
terry

PaulC 09-11-2003 05:46 PM

82pf 500 volt silver mica's are still available. I know AES has them.

21axp22 rebuild

1 Attachment(s)
ok here are some pics..of the bad tube next to the rebuilt tube..
i asked scotty if he liked rebuilding these..he said no!!
and told me to tell anyone else if interested that the cost would be around 450.00-500.00.. i waited about a year..
i have installed the tube everything is great.. but no.. like eric H have no color..heh..i have a ton of controls to replace that are bad in the front of the chassis.. and blue is badly bowed down.. tells me something else is wrong in convergence area..
i could not get .39 mfd caps for convergence circuit so used .33
at a higher voltage rating..this chassis needs so much attention..
the first pic is of the tube in operation..with crosshatch, cant see the badly bowed vert lines in this pic thou..(left to right lines),i know it is a problem with the vert conv circuit..:).
I am hoping that it is not a problem with the rebuild.anyone else care to comment on this problem?.. bigtime blue bow..looks like blue is frowning, and no controls correct it..:)..it seems i get problems after problems with this chassis,i hate to take the yoke and everything off and stuff it on the 21fb22 to see if i get the same results.. but i may do it..:)
let me know any suggestions guys..
thanks
terry

ctc-5

this set has no convergence board..no seleniums to be found on this chassis.. wish it was that easy..:)
this is the "lower end" chassis RCA had in 1956..ctc-5,and the thing is i am all excited to have found someone who would rebuild the metal 21axp22.and now have it in operation....works great, nice focus..but i am so confused about the blue bow..
terry..

Eric H 09-11-2003 09:43 PM

Does this set use the plastic slider thingies for the convergence?
Wonder if flipping them over would make any difference :dunno:

Another thought, probably a dumb one but...
Could the metal shell be magnetized? I would think that would be more likely to cause purity problems but who knows.

ctc-5 again

i am wondering if i have a missing parabola wave correction or something like that .. is missing,i have a ctc-5 manual but it is for the de;ux model that uses x-y demod,so the scan and convergence cicuits are the same..is your sams for the color difference model? if so i would love to see what the chroma curcuit looks like as i got problems there too..
i guess i am going to pull the chassis back out and hook it up to the 21fj22 i had sitting on the floor..
but something is telling me since the blue gun is on top that it needs some sort of waveform correction..i just hope it is not the tube..

hi terry. i have plenty of mica caps. i will look and see if i have the ones you need. pm me with your arrdess and i will send them to you. steve

found the problem...

well.. someone seems to like to play jokes..heh..
the blue convergence coil on the neck assy was inside out..
how i found it was i noticed the thick wires on the green and red on the inside.. blue just opposite.. and i didnt do it!!!!
heh..boy.. talk about loosing sleep trying to figure this out..:)
now i can get back to my other intermit problems..
the model of this set is "21CS7815..
thanks!
terry

Steve D. 09-12-2003 01:38 PM

What a relief!

Terry,
I was following your problem and the various posted replies like some old cliff-hanger serial. Stay tuned...what will he try next? :dunno: Glad it was just a quick switcheroo on the convergence coil and not the picture tube.

wiseguy 09-13-2003 07:09 AM

ctc-5

I guess i will join the " I have no color " club ..like eric H,odd thing,if i inject bars in place of tuner i get color.. but does not look right, color killer does not work corectly,i suspect that crystal diode in the killer circuit..if there is one in this chassis...i would like to pull the chassis again and check to see is the osc is running.. i would us a scope or better yet a freq counter, but i am working with an incorrect manual..anyone have a copy of this set i can buy?
21CS7815
this is the color difference model,or even a pic of just the chroma process circuit would help..:)
at lease i now have good convergence..I should have asked more questions from the seller before i bought this thing..
all controls in front were rusty..i was able to get all new old stock ones from moyer..i think i cleaned him out..
thanks
terry

I must say....you TV guys are...uh.......nuts? Do you know how many audio goodies you can buy with that kind of money. Heck, you can buy a whole new tv for 200 bucks.....and you can hook a DVD player to it. I am begging you, please come out of the dark ages. :p: :D

We're nuts??

We aren't paying hundreds of dollars for "magnetically aligned, super cooled, oxygenated, gold plated" power cords, or speaker wire that you could use to start a 747 engine and the like.:D

Nuts. eh?

Yesterday, I was in a house, with another tech, on a service call, for a sony HDTV projector unit. This guys house needed some serious repair, like the garage door was seriously in need of repair, and his car was an old nissan pulsar, probably 15 years old, BUT, he had AT LEAST $20,000 in his HT system including probably 5k in speakers alone, while the house, and car was in disrepair. Now, THAT is nuts!!

Many of the items I acquire are FREE, or near it. I would NEVER pay $100. per foot for MY speaker cables, or such.16 gauge cord, or 14 for higher power systems over 150wattts/ch, works fine!

As for coming out of the dark ages, what about spending $1000.00 for a single end 2a3 tube amp with LESS than 5 watts of power, when a NICE HT receiver 100+ watts /ch,x6, can be had for under $1000.00?

To each his own.

ctc-5 problems

well with all the problems with this set i am about to give up and put it on e-bay..this is the first set i have had rotton luck with,my ct-100 went well,as did my ctc-7..
i guess trying to work on this outside the cabinet sucks..and working on odd problems without the correct manual..
why did RCA make 2 different chassis's? odd it could not have been that much more expensive to leave it as a x-y demod set..
well..i guess one more try and will inject a signal stage by stage.
i have spent 2 entire days and eves this week on this thing..
GEE.. maybe I'll send the chassis out and get chromed like the audio guys do..:)~~~
terry..:)

Steve D. 09-13-2003 05:07 PM

Why two chassis?

Terry,
Although your question may be retorical.....
RCA was very good at marketing tv sets. Your "Special" series chassis was strickly aimed at getting the price of a color set below $500. That was still a huge sum in 1956. RCA had to cut some corners to get there. Hence the two chassis. They also figured when consumers walked in and saw that bare bones box of a cabinet, color set or not, the dealer would try and move them up to a fancier model. Having two chassis also allowed the dealer to talk up the technical advantage of the "better chassis" (more expensive) to a public very leery of color television. I believe RCA still lost money on every color set they sold until the mid 1960's.

progress on the ctc-5

1 Attachment(s)
here is a fast snap of my ctc-5 in color now..
i have been working on it in my garage, since i have not had time to move everything into the basement yet..
i have found a lot of those dogbone type capacitors to be bad..
kinda throws me off..the front trim and glass is still removed, and the chassis is running on it's side behind the cabinet..
still lots to do,but am very happy i got this far..!!
thanks guys for ur help.this is kinda of a different breed of set ,i think i prefer the ct-100 chassis and ctc-7..:)
this is the set with the rebuilt 21axp22
thanks again
terry
