1960 Zenith 16E21 problems
Strange video problems... The picture is always like in the pic below, but it improves a bit if I turn the fine tuning until it looses sync. The sound is good under both conditions. With a weaker signal off the antenna instead of the DVD the picture looks a bit better, but still has basically the same problem.
The set has been recapped, and all the tubes test good, and I just rechecked the IF tubes to be sure. I messed with the AGC control and it didn't help, but it does work best all the way to one side. |
It was the AGC like I thought last night, I was just too sleepy to notice which knob I was turning (When I thought I was adjusting the AGC I was actually adjusting the "fringe lock" instead).

Back together, some pics...

Adam,
Your Pics show a good example on how sharp those old Zenith B/W tv's can be. You cant beat the picture on a good working one. Nice job! -Tony |
Looks great.

Thanks... Still needs a little work though, gets some buzzing in the audio and horiz sync isn't that stable until it really warms up. I was told by the woman I bought it from that her grandmother used it well into the 90s. It had lots of caps already changed under there, even a new flyback, but also a lot of bad soldering, so I have a suspicion getting it to work perfectly as it should would take a long time to sort out, so I'm going to leave it as is for now and move on to the next set.
