Fixing broken 78s?

I just broke a 90 year old greek record that used to belong to my great-grandfather, is there any way to fix it, or at least salvage what's on it? My great grandfather's record collection consists mostly of old greek 78s and some old italian 78s, none of which I'm that crazy about except for 3 records of this one greek woman singer which I really like, and it is one of those I just broke, and I have never seen any copies of her records outside of these 3, I really hope I didn't just break the only copy of something. :worried:

Never had a lot of luck gluing them back together, but I haven't tried that trick in many, many years. I spose you've got little to lose, but alignment of grooves once a piece has broken off entirely is very difficult.

Adam, take a look here: http://www.78rpmrecord.com/repair.htm

Interesting and hopefully useful info there.

But a crack is not a break.

Hey I thought you Greeks were supposed to break dishes, not records! O P A !

Once you get it back together, you might decide to record it. Most repairs of this type will leave a tick where the crack occurs. It seems to me that there is software around that can do a pretty good job of removing rhythmic noises suck as ticks and pops.

Good luck with it!

Agreed, man, but it was the best I could do! :D

Don't use your good stylus. Find a beater.

Attacking the problem from another angle, what is the name of this artist?

You just never know what will turn up around here...

I think Ernie's on the right track, i.e., try finding a replacement.

As for repairing broken 78s, lord how I have tried, unsuccessfully. A few years ago I found a copy of "Steel Mill Blues" 78 by Blind Blake, in two pieces; brother I nearly went blind trying to glue that record back to whole. Nothing doing, and I still have those two pieces.

...or what will turn up on THAT auction site or other ol' shellac websites out there. Old record shops also have 78s.

What's the label, artist, song & record number?

I have found many nice Victor, Berliner and Edison recordings at THAT place.
