Hi, saw this tonight and was wondering if anyone knew about it. I don't even know if it is color. Would love to pick up an old RCA though, it has been quite some time. Thank you.

Thanks Carmine. I am passing on it because I really need a color set at this time. My bedroom set, a sony wega, lost all blue this weekend and I definitely want a vintage replacement.

You aren't missing much... I watch a B&W set in my bedroom; shows still suck as bad as they do in color. :banana:

Besides, I'd think finding any old TV in NYC is rare. Doesn't that city ban anything they don't agree with, sort like California? What's $10 going to get you in New York anyways? A can of pop? :scratch2:

Seems like 30 or 40 percent of all the GREAT vintage-TV finds are in Upstate NY inside of a few hours from the city. Like everyone from the 1946 heyday took their first sets to the lake cottage and left them there to appreciate...

You should have no trouble finding something schweet by Christmas if you have a car to go get it.

Yeah I can drive to get it, but it isn't interesting enough for me at this point. I really would like a color set especially since I have some black and white GE's already.

New york City doesn't limit what we can throw out, at least not in Queens, where I am. I have thrown out my fair share of 80s finds... Now I can actually use one... go figure.

I am just finishing the restoration of a RCA portable very similar to this. It is from 1965. One thing about these early-middle 1960s RCA sets is that they use the Nuvistor RF amplifier (6CW4 in this case). This seems to work better on cable(less interference from other channels) than other sets with the typical glass tube.

I agree with Carmine about the quality of the shows.

Aren't those nuvistors hard-to-find nowadays? IIRC, the front end of my old Fisher 500 used them, and a few people recommended that I find a backup.

I actually forgot about the flood of SDTV sets on craigslist... Guess I'll just pick up an 'obsolete' set from the 80s/90s. I plan on using it with my digital cable set-top anyway.

I have several Nuvistors. They do not seem to be that rare to me. In addition to the RCA that I am just finishing, I have two 1961 RCA B&W portables that I watch on a regular basis. These are series string sets, so have the 2CW4 instead of the 6CW4 RF amplifier.

They are of the RCA "Sportabout" line.
