HV Regulator
 

Anyone out there have a Victoreen HV regulator they would part with? The one in my 15" Philco gave it up completely today. The tube types I could use are M108-18 / 6392 (18KV) or preferably M108-20 / 6353 (20KV).

Victoreen stopped producing them 5-10 years ago, the replacements I have been able to find are all low voltage 1kv-2kv units.

I've sent emails to about 20 tube dealers but no hits yet.


As a temporary fix I can wire in a 6BK4 as in the CT100 regulator circuit.

I think you will have a great deal of trouble sourcing that very obscure component. You may consider grabbing a handful of zener diodes, soldering them into a series snake, and potting the works into the original regulator housing, or make a new housing altogether from PVC pipe or somesuch.

That method crossed my mind for a few seconds.;)

But, stringing 20,000 volts worth of Zeners together !?

It could be done. Mouser has a 200 v zener for 65 cents. 100 could be put in series inside the space of the gas regulator for $65. Insulating cambric could be used to prevent arcing.

There is a 1N5117, 400 volt , 3 watt zener.
............... 1N4996, 390 volt, 3 watt ..........

I see nothing higher than 200 volts in the small 1 watt series'.
