Trans Oceanic H500

Hi gang!
Been away for a while.

I've gone shortwave crazy:D Just purchased a Trans Oceanic H500.
Can you enlighten me on this wonderful radio.

What can I expect as far as listening to European Broadcast with this radios
telescopic antenna.

Thanks!

They are nice radios. Made before the dreaded ballast tube in the power supply.

In order to be in its best operating condition possible, expect to do a through recap, replace out of tolerance resistors, replace any bad tubes, pray that the 1L6 is still good (sold state replacements are available,) and do a through RF and IF alignment.

When working properly with and outdoor antenna, they are awesome performers. When using the built in antenna you will need to by away from anything that gives off RFI or EMI. This includes but is not limited to:

Fluorescent lighting
dimmer switches and rheostats
transformers
computers, VCRs, DVD, cable boxes, or anything else with a switching power supply
cellular phones
wireless systems (cordless phone, computer wi-fi, cordless headphones, etc)

---essentially anything that can create RF or electromagnetic noise will cause reception disturbances, especially with shortwave. An outdoor antenna will work best with these sets.

After you clean it up, a coat or 2 of black shoe polish will make the case GLOW.

Yeah those 1L6 tubes are EXPENSIVE!!!

My dad has 2 of these radios and i need to overhaul them.

He keeps fryin tubes and i can bet a bad cap or 2 is to blame...

Don't remove or insert tubes with power on, you can blow tube filaments. I would suggest replacing the selenium rectifier with a diode and increase the value of the series resistor (r36) to compensate for the lower voltage drop of the diode.

Trans Oceanic

Thanks for the replies to my post regarding H500 Trans Oceanic.

I purchased a unit from Ebay for $65. Hopefully the set is as good as the seller described.

Can't wait to fire that puppy up and tune in the world.

Regards!
