DuMont RA-103 on Ebay

Can anyone explain this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=3272298805

Even in mint condition I wouldn't think it would bring over $3-400.

ChuckA 02-07-2004 09:03 PM

No idea why, but I wish I had one to offer the bidders at half the bid price and see if anyone would bite.

Does anyone recognise any of the bidders? I sure do not.

Eric H 02-08-2004 12:53 AM

I smell a rat, at least three of the high bidders have dealt with the seller before on this auction:

redkschmitt, dsc11coop and rwc5s2 were bidders on both auctions, what a coincidence :saywhat:

Uhh, anybody else think the "picture" shown on the screen looks just a little "too" good ?!? -Sandy G.

I for one am glad it is up on ebay, and that Steve mentioned it. I have the floor model in almost as good of shape (paid $50 last Fall) but it is missing the FM radio tuning dial. Now I at least have a good closeup of one.

I am wondering if there is an evaluation scam going on. Could it be that they need its value artifically high for insurance, or maybe charitable donation reasons?:dunno: It would certainly be a cheap way to do it, getting a couple of cohorts to bid it out of site, and then just have to pay the ebay fees. All legal too I think. Maybe we should all make copies of any ebay auctions that do this with sets we own, in case of a fire or somethin'?

Marlin, do you just need the dial face?
I have the whole tuner assembly if you need it, just say the word.

I gave the pointer away awhile back.

got the cabinet too.

doesn't look like shilling :dunno:

Charlie 02-08-2004 07:26 PM

And to think... the reserve hasn't been met yet... even at 2850!

...

One look at the feedback on the bidders tells all - lots of shill bidding they know the reserve and won't bid over it, just waiting for a sucker. Bet it's the same chassis as my Stromberg C, just a different dial, got mine at the waste disposal site for $20.

Eric H 02-10-2004 10:00 PM

OK, I did suggest to eBay that they investigate this item.

Eric H 02-10-2004 10:02 PM

By the way, the address for contacting eBay is here.

Not that I'm suggesting anyone else should report this, noo, I'd never suggest that.

Steve McVoy 02-10-2004 10:07 PM

Ebay is very slow to act on shill bidding, and requires positive proof. There is a guy in England who did it on every item he sold. I followed a bunch of his auctions, gathered data, and submitted it to Ebay. They said there wasn't enough evidence. Finally, a year later, the shut him down. Of course he'll just register again with a new name.

Anybody looked at this one today?. $3,550. Now it's getting pretty ridiculous.
