First TV Project Stewart Warner 9121A
 

Hello,

This is my first post. The other day I bought a Stewart Warner Model 9121A from a junk store for 35.00. I just had to have it.

It apparently works, however I don't want to try it until I recap it and whatnot.

The cabinet is perfect, however there is evidence of mold in the record player area.

I've recapped/restored many many radios in the past, however this is my first TV.

I was wondering, if there are any specifics to this Stewart Warner TV that anyone would be willing to pass along to me. (Year Built, Cost when new, Average current value, collectible value/desire, model specific technical info...)

Wonder if the chassis is their own design?
I have a SW here that uses a Raytheon chassis but that knob layout doesn't look familiar.

I haven't worked on old electronics for a few years. Got married, bought a house, started a new career.... This will be something I have time for now, and enjoy. Too bad I have a day job. :(

Welcome to the wonderful world of television collecting, Matt. This is how it started for me. I was interested in radio, and had fixed a few, then found a Zenith console black and white TV in the basement of an antique shop for $10. It followed me home, as have many sets after that. Be careful, this hobby gets addicting. But it's a lot of fun.

If you've done radios before, then TV's shouldn't be much of a stretch. It's the same deal as the radios - replace the capacitors, check tubes, etc. The only thing to watch out for in TV's is the picture tube. Be sure you discharge it before you disconnect that scary red wire from the side of the tube. The tube acts as a big capacitor, and can store a nasty zap.

And yes, I know how frustrating it is to have a job. I'm at work now, but I can't wait to get home to work on my projects!

Hello all,

The guy with the Stewart Warner in Madison turned out flaky. I was supposed to pick it up, now he won't answer his phone or reply to my e-mails.

Oh well, I still have the first set to think about!

My Sams should be here soon, and I met an awesome guy on the forum that lives not to far from me. He's got the know-how and equipment to get me going in the right direction.

Well. I did it.

I had a week off of work, and recapped the set, and tested the tubes. Once I started, I just couldn't stop!

So with everything back in its place, and the chassis set back into the cabinet I powered it up....

I got something..... but not what I wanted.

The tube lights up about 2/3rds the way, but no audio/picture at all.

Where would YOU start?
