Hallicrafters S36A UHF receiver
 

This radio was among my latest finds. This will receive AM, FM, and CW from 27.8 MC to 148 MC. I have not checked it's operating status yet. I wonder how well this will do receiving commercial FM broadcast stations. This thing is heavy!

Hello i had one of those and sold it years ago.They will sound very nice thru a 12 to 15 inch speaker.Make sure all tubes are good and all caps are good befor turning on.The acorn tubes are a bit hard to find tho.I had 2 of them used one to get the other going.Heavy well made..I got some FM stations as far away as 60 miles with it and it worked great on the air band too. The one i got going had been used by the FCC no less. The tone to me sounds good..Good luck with it.Sprman:music:

I got one, too. It works, I REALLY need to get my FM antenna up...Sure would like to stumble upon a tower some ham don't use anymore..But the chances of that are like slim to none...

nice radiotvnut.dont forget about the 2meter ham band as you should be able to pick them up with it also.for anything about 30mhz i use a discone antenna about 40-50ft mounted on my roof.good luck with your new radio:thmbsp:

Unfortunately, I don't have the case for this radio. The owner had it mounted in a rack.

Those are not at all common. Nice find!

radiotvnut: An S-20, S-24 or S-25 cabinet would probably work...they all used essentially the same cabinetry.
SandyG: check the classifieds on qth.com...lots of towers and tower sections there...appears some may be close to you as well. Also, check with a 2-way radio service place...can be a good source for towers and tower sections.

Hi the right cabinet will have a door that opens on the top and will have metal data plate on the door... Do not mess with the RF alignment do just the IFs..RF has vert thin wire thats glued down break that and you will have to remove the rf deck and take it a part to repair the wire.. I know took me 3 days to fix that a real pain.The last tube befor ant is a 957 acorn if i remember right they use it to keep the set from radiating out the ant.I jumpered mine and i got many more stations i used a piece of wire i cut for the FM band it was in ceiling! Danke Schoen for the tips, guys ! I HAVE FM DXed from here, &the band is almost "solid" from one end to another. My granmother had a Zenith K-731 & an antenna set up for it, she kept that radio set up on Black Mountain, NC, outside of Asheville for years-they played classical. Anyhow, I hooked up a cheapo TV/AM/FM unit to that antenna, & I was pulling stuff in from Atlanta-300 miles away. Might have been tropo, but this antenna was on a little hill, highest point in the neighbourhood, anything's possible. Now, I have the S-36, a couple of Nems-Clarke "Spook" receivers, plus the tuner on my Yammy RX-V1, & I don't have a decent antenna to feed any of 'em....Shame on me.

Hi Sandy try a piece of wire cut for FM band..I allways had great luck with that.When in Maryland thats what i used , FM band was full no empty spots.I can get huntsville here 104 something on my car radio no less..Dag gum it may well try to buy back that S-36 now you all got me talking about it.I got a data plate for it somewhre...Sprman55:scratch2:
