I went to a local antique mall this morning to browse, and saw a space where the seller was closing out and selling everything dirt cheap. At first I didn't see anything particularly interesting, but at second glance I noticed two table
radios sitting on the floor in the corner. They were both marked "closeout-5.oo". They are now both sitting in my living room. One is a RCA-Victor model
46X3 AC-DC set in a wood cabinet, and the other is a Delco in a bakelite cabinet. The model number isn't on the Delco, however. I'll have to do a little detective work for that one. The RCA plays, but not very well. It is definitely
in need of new filter caps. The Delco is completely dead, no power at all. Still,
not bad for $10.00 at an antique mall, especially one here.

That was good luck finding those radios at those prices. I'm to the point where I'll buy about any tube radio for $5. Of course, the days of finding $5 tube radios are few and far between. They usually ask a minimum of $35 for the junk at the antique mall. When they tack the word "antique" in place of "junk", the price usually goes up. There's several beat up radios that are sitting in an antique mall and I know they've been there for 6 or 7 years. I tried to convince the owner that they were way overpriced and he pretty much told me that the price was $xx.xx and that I could take it or leave it.

The 46X3 is a '39. I don't suppose the Delco is one of those "ribbon grilles"?

The Delco has plain vertical slats over the speaker, Nothing fancy. I've taken the chassis out of the cabinet and discovered the reason it won't power up, its a mess! Someone replaced the cord at one point and in their attemp at repair they broke a terminal strip and now two caps aren't connected at one end. Its not a lost cause, though, but I still don't have a model#. All I know
is that it's an AA5 as many of these small sets are, and form it's appearance I'm guessing it's prewar. I'm going to the library to see if I can Find a Riders
for the RCA, then I'll get started on recapping it.

I found a great $5 radio today at the local tradelot! It's an AIRLINE 62-230 and man is it rough, but the cabinet is great!
Like you said, this radio actually said to me "take me home". No one should pass a $5 old tube radio at all, its unhuman to do that!
Anybody into novelty radios??

Sandy, I know exactly what you are talking about. It's hard to resist a old radio when they say pretty please!
