To avoid problems with new threads: A question!
 

This is regarding the changes to the forum rules which now prohibit links to ads elsewhere on the Internet...

From the new rules:

"Unacceptable Post Content
Please do not post any content or links with content of the following nature:
5. Unauthorized advertisements and/or solicitations outside of the Classifieds Forum without the express consent of Audiokarma are strictly prohibited. Marketing initiatives whether direct, indirect or veiled are also strictly prohibited. There zero tolerance for Spam, which will bring an automatic suspension."

First let me say that I'm not out to make waves, as hopefully everyone knows that about me based on my history here.

How about the many many cases of eBay and Craigslist ads which DON'T belong to the AK member; such as when we see something on CL or eBay on the other side of the country that we know will be a prize for one of our fellow members? Additionally, how about all the fun threads which arise from peculiarities of advertised eBay TVs? Heck, I hope those will all still be allowed. Please advise, as this is a technicality and I don't want to see anybody suspended (nor myself!) To be unable to make such posts will STIFLE a huge number of interesting, and very significant threads :no:

May we have permission to go ahead, when suitable, and post an eBay ad link when the purpose of the thread is NOT to sell our own item, but to discuss the item itsself being put for sale out of general interest?

If we need more volunteer mods, or more funds, I can help on both! I know it's a lot of work to weed out the crap and spam, as we have tons of posts on the Toyota Diesel forum with new fake users making posts in the threads to sell iPhones, hook you up with enlargement pills, etc etc. I hope it's just THOSE links that are going to be cracked down on.

Speaking as a "supermod" who doesn't usually frequent the TV forums, I think that's a good question. In the audio forums, we move posts like that to Dollars and Sense. We're looking for consistency, but I know things have been somewhat different in the TV forums. I'll raise the question with the admins, and someone will post here to make things clear.

kx250rider, you're interpreting the rule a little too broadly - the intent is to stop people from posting links to their own auctions/marketing/sales sites.

Links posted to alert others to deals, or to discuss the items for sale are not forbidden - we only ask that they go into the proper forum, where they can be more easily monitored.

Maybe for the moment you could post in Dollars and Sense, then post a link to that thread here in the TV forum? You'd be within the rules, and wouldn't have to go search D&S every time you logged in.

This is a very good question.
I started a "TV Treasures" thread in this forum some time ago to alert members of TV sightings on eBay and CraigsList.

I can lock it down to stop future posting if I have to but I'd like to keep what's there already because it has a lot of pictures.

If posting in D&S and linking to it is what everyone else does then I guess we can do it too, who knows, maybe some of the Audio people might have leads on some good TV's.

...or, vice versa?

Now I'm mixed up. Does that mean I'm no longer allowed to post interesting links to things unrelated to me that I see?
Maybe, can't even post a link to an article I did in another forum??
I'm confused here.... Please help.. I have no interest in being banned, either..

Bill, it has been a rule for quite some time at AK that items for sale can only be linked in the D&S forum, and only if the item is not yours. Links to articles you've written are fine (If you wrote it, you can always copy and paste it over here, too!), interesting links that will spur good discussion, all that is fine.

The TV forums kind of got "grandfathered" around the rule changes for a while, but have now been brought into line with the rest of the forums. This is intended to make ALL the forums easier to moderate, not to in any way "penalize" the active posters in the TV forum, and please don't take it that way. :)

All this change. It's scary! :D

I take it that there's no chance of us getting our own "Dollars and Sense" board for us TV/Radio guys? I don't venture into the world of the audiophiles much...

Yeh, it's the same here. I mostly come into the BW, or Color tv sections, myself. Though I've been a member forawhile, I am not very familiar with the rules here....Thanks.

Thank you Ozmoid for clarifying... It was just that after the admonition by Grumpy, I was concerned that I, or someone, would screw up by making a non-permissible link to an eBay ad.

So the following is actually "the spirit of the rule":

As long as the link is for the sake of discussion, (i.e. "Jeez: Look at this guy thinking he's going to get $1000 for that 80s Zenith color TV on ebay"), and is not an attempt to promote any item for sale, it's OK. But to post "Hey; here's a link to my CT-100 on eBay", is NOT OK. Additionally, other members and I have posted warning references to ads on eBay which may have been fakes or fraud, and perhaps such postings as those will protect a fellow member from a loss.

Most recently, a prewar Meissner TV on eBay was discussed in a thread here, and many facts about that TV were brought to light, allowing any AK buyer to make a more educated bid on it. That particular TV had passed through my hands, as well as at least 1 other AKer's. I offered some facts about it which were not mentioned in the seller's ad. May we assume that a thread like that is also OK?

I was interested about that too as if it wasnt for Eric's thread and John M posting a link he found on CL i would have never got my Zenith roundie. Although i'm pretty good at searching on the one auction site, i rarely look on CL for finds as theres usually nothing good thats local or within driving distance to me. CL hasnt really caught on locally yet. I know several of us found out on deals this way that they wouldnt have known about otherwise. Thanks for clearing it up Oz

OK, as of earlier today the way this rule will be implemented in the TV forums is under review, simply because the TV posters generally use eBay links somewhat differently than the rest of the forums. ( <- Feel free to interpret that last line as "a good thing". :) )

Where is the proper place to put a posting that you are looking for, and in the market for, certain parts: IE: WANTED....picture tube etc. ?????

Or: is it OK to make "Wanted" postings???

There is no add section for "Wanted Color tv parts" or " Wanted B&W TV parts" in the new TV Clasifieds. There are only provisions for "For Sale" stuff.

THe administrators should be setting up soon a section for Wanted items in the classified area, no charge for posting.
