Telefunken "Opus 5430 MX" - Hi-Fi FM Stereo

Just picked one up today, irresistibly beautiful and nearly mint.
Have the matching "Hi-Fi" Loudspeaker(s) "5403" which have some damage to the wood grill slats, but nothing an afternoon of patience won't cure.

Tons of information on Telefunken in general but not a whole lot can I find on this piece except manufactured 1963/64.

Any input, information, opinions on sound quality (I'm bring it up now slowly so I haven't yet heard it) links to web sites; anything would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if the '60s qualifies it as an "antique" radio, as well as the fact that it's actually a receiver by American definition, but I figured this was the best place to start.

I've passed on a lot of console Telefunkens because they were always in need of so much. Broken parts, missing parts etc. This one was too good to be true.

I can just sit and stare at it. Packed with all Telefunken glass except for one Bugle Boy and an Amperex.

Let me know what you think of this piece.

Thank you,
Craig

The craftsmanship in those consoles is just amazing. I know exactly what you mean about just sitting and staring at it. Nice find! Let us know how it sounds.

Looking on Radiomuseum.org they list a stereo tuner with that model number that has 13 tubes and sold for 715 Duetchemarks when new. Thats a hell of a set. Is yours a table radio?

Yes, a large table model. Well, for the past week I've been passing a signal and gradually waking it up. Listening mainly to classical, as they have the only broadcast around here that's of any quality, or really worth listening to, for that matter. No external antenna, just what's built into the set. I had to resurrect the speakers gently, at first they rapped and rattled with any presence of bass like a loose spider, but that's not the case. Spiders and cones are perfect after cleaning out an inch or more of hard dirt. They are loosening up nicely and every day I can nudge up the bass a little more.
I have wanted a nice tube radio for some time. I have a couple already, but they are just decent table top kitchen, or by the easy chair, medium size models, an old plastic Zenith and a wooden Packard Bell. Nothing as imposing as this Telefunken.
As for this Telefunken and it's sound, I'm not really ready to write anything here about it in detail because I'm still in shock and a state of amazement. It's that good and I still haven't even serviced it yet and cleaned it internally.
I'm running the speakers that came with it; the baffle is removable with all the drivers and network intact. Yes, I am running them truly "open baffle" while I do the repairs to the cases. I need some Euro style speaker plugs so I can make up a set of cables and try this receiver out with some other speakers. The wire on the Telefunkens is captive and I'm not going to remove them.
A fine fellow in Germany is sending me a service manual. I don't know if the phono input is for ceramic or not. I am praying it will be magnetic capable, but I doubt it. If it turns out that it is, and if everything keeps going the way it's going, I may be selling A LOT of "sorry state" electronics.
Enough of this rambling.
As always,
Craig

Phil Nelson just posted an interesting link to a youtube video on RAR+P today. Have a look, it's terminally cute, albeit in German...

Hi,

Restored, these sets are superb and a joy to the eyes and ears. I am known as Telefunken Kent for no small reason due to these.
