Was in need of a tube for my Admiral so went to Brashears radio and tv repair in Hannibal MO Tuesday. Got my tube and then Russell showed me his deal of the day. A recapped, 1953? Philco combo. I have been looking for a combo, so we negotiated and I bought it. Got a nifty set of rabbit ears too. Below a few pics and the tube chart on the back, I am unable to see a model # on the set yet. It is out in my garage as it was raining when I got home with it. Only downside to this set is that the record player is of newer vintage, Russell said the original was missing. I am happy to report that all functions work and the radio plays nicely. This set will probably go in my living room after I get the scratches and stuff hidden.

Your Philco is a 1953 model 1884. The phonographs are not that uncommon so you should be able to find one from a philco radio/phono combination of the same vintage. I can send you a picture of what it looks like.

Very nice find there!! Although I'm surprised the picture tube didn't explode from having an image of that irritating, squawking Rachael Ray broad on it...

I'd be interested in knowing the model # when you do a bit more digging.

Those are cool combo's. Its nice to have everything in a cabinet thats not much bigger than a regular tv so you dont have to clear out a whole wall to place it. Steve is right in the fact that the turntable should be an easy find as they used them in portables, tabletops and radio/record player combo's. I see them regularly on the auction site. You can also post here and on the ARF site and one of the members might have a spare up for grabs. Nice find and enjoy!

I could certainly be wrong, but it looks by what I see in the pics that the CRT was replaced at some point with a more modern rectangular type. I had an old Admiral with a replacement picture tube like that.

Yes, Old1625, I agree that the CRT is of much later era. I have not taken the back off it, and probably wont till something wants me to, as all caps have been replaced and everything works great. I lugged it in the house, I am amazed by the light weight and compact design. I bear hugged it to lift it out of my truck, and did the same to get it in the house. Looking for a correct style Phono for it now.

Shining up the set
 

It started raining on me while I was mowing the lawn, so I went in the house and grabbed all the knobs and brightwork hardware on the set. Then headed to the garage to polish them up on the wheel. Also, you may notice the set has a better appearance. Wood Finish stain marker used in light applications and followed by an entire paste wax of the cabinet. Still looking for an original turntable for it. But I am enjoying this set very much. And yes, that is Elvis's legs next to it. :D

Wow...Purty set...CRT might be original, but it looks very bright for one on a 55 yr old set. Great score ! An' you do GREAT work w/the polish 'n' Elbow Grease...

Looks original to me, or original number replacement.
My 53 uses a 21EP4 with a vertically flat (more or less) face, I think 21ZP4 was another tube used by Philco.

Eric, there is a tag on the top of the crt that I really could not read, but it did have
21EP4 on it and I was going to post that but forgot. So must be original but it is a very bright picture for such an old set. I dont remember any sets when I was a kid that you didnt have to pull a shade on a sunny day to watch tv. But maybe all the sets were getting pretty worn in my neighborhood. I am glad it is an original type crt, I thought for sure it was something installed later from another type set. My reason for taking the back off is that I asked the guy I bought it from if he thought the crt was of different type. He said he thought it was the original crt to the set. He is has been a tv repairman all his life and has worked on the set from the early 60's on.

Your lucky! I've got a set with a 21EP4B and its sooo very weak. I hate to put a brightener on it, but maybe I have to temporarly.
