What a grand TV!
I guess it was a custom made to order cabinet?
On this Twilight Zone episode an earlier scene showed the repairman wiping off the back of a rectangular CRT so I guess it was another set on a different stage for the opposite camera view.
Were such ostentatious cabinet styles ever popular?

I believe that set was from episode 40, "A Thing About Machines". It's about an ill-tempered writer who reviles and constantly abuses machines, and starts to think machines are conspiring against him. Which they do.

Very doubtful it was a working set, empty cabinet with Rod Serling superimposed on the screen.

Yeah-Until the Sony Trinitron came on the scene, you almost NEVER saw a shot of a TV being "on"...

Because of beat patterns from the vertical deflection of the TV with the film cameras used in TV shows or movie production, they'd never use a TV that was presenting a picture when filming a scene. They'd paste in the desired action on the TV set screen later in "post -production". This in turn allowed movie and TV show makers to use "fake" TV sets (ones never actually manufactured) in their productions. Or place color action on a B&W set. :D This TV in this thread is like such an animal.

That prop set must have made Serling very proud. And my sets are conspiring against me too.

With all due respect to the folks here who might have liked it, I found that cabinet to be... ugly.

It reminds me of some of the "steam punk" projects, where people stick various junk-found or adapted bits together to create vaguely Victorian or Edwardian fantasy-world things. Wouldn't be too hard to create a custom case like that, if you wanted to.
