Sylvania suitcase set

This is another set that my friend Craig has been holding for me. It is a '62 or somewhere there about. It has no HV and is covered in cigarette smoke, I mean covered! Hopefully, the tar has not shorted out the PCB. I ruled out all of the simple fixes, the FBT is good, the HOT is good, in fact all the tubes are good and appear to be original. I tested the CRT and was disappointed at first. The emissions were non existent but a few minutes of the filament running at 7 1/2 volts brought it back with a vengeance. Now, you can get a 10 plus count on the life test, the needle drops about a quarter inch then comes back 1/8 in and stays there. Tests very strong now. Still no HV but that will be for another day. The HV section is in great physical shape with no melted wax or signs of overheating. I replaced the HV regulator tube to no avail as well. I think it is a cap or something, maybe a resistor. Doesn't seem too serious. It will make a nice addition to the collection after it is completely disassembled, cleaned and repaired.

Woah thats nasty! But has a ton of potential! Sylvanias are among my favorites from this time. Nice!

Neat set but it's making me ill to look at it!

I have a Wards portable that was nearly as bad, I took it apart and gave it a soaking with simple green followed by a quick shower.

Love those suitcase sets. That set makes me glad I quit smoking. Good luck with it as it does not look like it has had a rough life, making for a great looking addition to your collection.

That set looks pretty filthy inside, but I've seen a lot worse, and still was able to get them going.

If there is no HV you want to keep a sharp eye on the plate of the HOT. There may be no horizontal drive signal from the oscillator, a condition that can cause the HOT cathode current to run away and melt the tube.

Although it pains me to think about it, that set is old enough that a recap may be indicated.

I never took up smoking. Only reason to smoke, back in high school, was to be "cool", but I knew that I was way too nerdy for smoking to ever make me "cool"... :D

Anyway, that set's inside view reminds me of a set I once had back in the early 70's. But mine was cleaner. Not spotless, as we got it from a neighbor who said that the set fell and busted the CRT, but before that it worked. We took a chance and got a replacement CRT, and it did work. Took a while to clean the prosper and glass dust out of the chassis...

I had enough sense to quit back in the sixth grade...

Unreal. I haven't seen a Sylvania like that in almost 40 years. My aunt had one just like that... and she smoked, too. That must stink like h€ll:yuck:
