G'day

Greetings and g'day to all from the land downunder!

I have been lurking for a little while and have been fascinated by the tales of bringing all those veteran color sets back to life.

Australia did not get television until 1956 (although experiments began in the 20s) and despite strong urging from the commercial TV networks at the time we adopted only B/W broadcasting on the 625/25 standard.

Throughout the late 50s and 60s the Nine Network here carried intensive trials of 625 NTSC but resistance from the government bureaucracy prevented colour brodcasting using this standard.

I first saw colour tv using US NTSC 525/30 at a demonstration in 1968 ....it was just amazing!

Ultimately Australia adopted PAL G as its standard and colour broadcasting began in late 1974.

I know the exact date ..the 24th of October 1974 to be precise. And the first program I watched was golf! LOL And I still have the set I saw it on and it still works beautifully! A 1974 NEC 14" portable.

I remember being blown away by the all that green!!!

Within 12 months of colour broadcasting beginning some 60% of Australians had colour sets ....the fastest take up of colour anywhere apparently!!

Finally goodluck to all those out there restoring sets.

G'day, mate !! Welcome to the vast repository of arcane knowledge known as the AK TeeVee forums. Don't know 'bout you, but I never got over my boyhood fascination w/the Magick Boxe that displayed pictures. I can only think that a roundie would be a very rare byrd indeed down yonder in Down Under. Oh well. Enjoy yrself-this is a GREAT group. -Sandy G.

Welcome aboard, just please don't go around whistling the theme song to "Skippy" lest we be forced to kick your arse! :whip: :D

Anthony
P.S. For those who don't know, Skippy was the kangaroo equivalent of Lassie.
