This is a picture of a Philips K1 color set from 1950 (approx).

I have no other details ...it is obviously a projection unit?

Anyone out there ever seen this beast or have any more information?

I've heard from a person who was a Philips employee in England in the 50s. He says that the K1 used a 21 inch CRT, and was made later than 1950. That obviously doesn't agree with the picture you posted, which looks like a projection model. Can you tell me any more about the picture? Where did you find it? Is it dated? Is there text that refers to it as a K1?

The picture comes from a Philips colour TV brochure from the 1975.

It is possible that there is an error in the brochure. But the picture is clearly labeled K1 and it is part of a series of photos of early Philips colour tvs.

I suspect that it is in fact not a 1960s K1 ...but some other experimental colour TV from the early 50s. Which begs the question as to what system it is for ....NTSC or something Philips was working on.

The other sets most certainly look like the Philips models of the early 60s complete with round crts.

Now I am really interested ....just what is this beastie?

Rereading and rereading the brochure (for the 33rd time) I still cannot determine what this set is....the brochure was for the introduction of colour stes to Oz in 1974/75.

It has a series of 9 pictures of early Philips colour sets of which this is the first one...the pictures are labeled K1-K8..which now makes me wonder if the this set is a mistake or is mislabeled or is in fact just a B/W set from the late 40s - early 50s????

The K1 we all know and love is similar is style to most roundies...I would be interested to know what your UK friend thought of the early Philips/Norelco sets?

Philips sets here have always had excellent colour (actually probably the best on a standard conventionally available set) but have been a little more unreliable than their Japanese counterparts.

Could you post some pictures of those other Phillips roundie sets? I love to see those "foreign" sets.

Here are some early Philips color sets.

Philips began work on colour television in 1941 and began building sets once the NTSC standard was finalised in 1953.

They exported sets to Canada prior to the commencement of European colour broadcasting in the late 1960s.

Hey, thanks for those pics. I always wondered if anyone besides US manufactuers produced color sets in the "roundie" era. Always figured the answer was "no" since everybody else seemed to get color after 1965. Your pics, and the ones from Japan have shown otherwise.

Any idea where those Phillips sets were built? Have to wonder if it was profitable to build color sets just for Canada. Anybody know when the CBC went to color?
