A really neat mini-project.......

I've been using a 15" Dell LCD monitor as a TV, connected to a Viewsonic box for the last 4 months or so, and the other day started digging out TV projects that I've got.

Ed (Roundscreen here) gave me this sad sack of a Crosley set about 3 months ago, that I really saw promise in. Got the chassis out to find a charred yoke and no tubes, so decided to have some fun with the cabinet in the meantime.

The LCD monitor is a dead perfect fit inside, even the height of the base is dead on! The cabinet obviously needs refinishing, but of course the flash really makes the flaws stand out that aren't so blatant in regular room light.

Some double sided automotive tape to hold the knobs on, and I've got a perfectly watchable TV set while leaving the entire cabinet and guts unaltered. Cool, huh? :D

I'd try to find some momentary contact rotary switches that I could connect in parallel with the push buttons of the DTV receiver. The channel up and channel down, volume up and down, and power. And mount these switches inside the cabinet and use the TV knobs on them.

Now thats something I can go for. Its much better than fishtanking if you ask me. Honestly I'd have done the same thing if there were any unreasonably difficult to replace parts in my Philco console.

Is that black panther on top, a lamp? If so, I had one of those a long time ago and would love to have another;)

That is excellent! It looks great and confuses the hell out of people who look at the set and don't realize what you've done.
The Viewsonic box is one of the coolest devices I've seen in years but few people are aware of it and the fact that it will operate at different resolutions and is also capable of switching to a 75 Hz refresh rate.

Kam that rules. I'd love to see the look on peoples faces when they see it...

That's really cool Tim, I'd like to do something similar with one of my basket cases.

What I'd really like to do if I had the tools and skills is build a 1/4 scale 50's console set using one of those cheap 5" Chinese sets.
