Silvertone 6002
 

Here's a Silvertone 6002 that I restored. Maybe I shouldn't call it a restoration considering the color scheme I chose. I was watching Smallville when I picked it.

I decided to try my hand at powder coating so the case and lettering are powder coated. The knobs were sprayed with spray paint for plastic.

I decided to test the capacitors that I took out when I recapped it. Only one tested good. I knew the paper ones were prone to failure but I had no idea... I also used safety caps where appropriate.

Nice job! I've got a friend that repaints the old brown bakelite and the small metal radios in more lively colors. He has actually sold some for pretty big bucks. Most of these radios would have brought next to nothing in their original finish.

I like it. Much better than dull bakelite.

I've got an old rusty Hallicrafters....and may get the powder paint kit at HF or Sears to give it a try!

I really like those colors too! What's your powder painting set-up, a pro outfit or one of the DIY kits?

I also purchased a cheap toaster oven large enough for the radio.

After stripping the case I used the electrolytic method of rust removal using calcium carbonate (washing soda 1cup/gal) and a hefty power supply.

Then I did an iron phosphate dip to corrosion proof it and provide better adhesion for the powder coat.

I think you can get a shinier finish with regular spray paint, but the powder coat is very durable and scratch proof.
