Trouble with my Sony KV-3000R
 

Well I finally got around to doing more testing of my KV-3000R video problem. Peak white areas seem to go negative - even from cold start. Thought for a long time I had some bad caps on the C-board (board that plugs into the back of the CRT). But it's looking more like an emission problem and/or gassy CRT.

Does anyone know where I can get an 820DB22 30" Trinitron picture tube?

The CVM-3000 commercial monitor used it, but I don't know of one off hand. They're not NEAR as rare as the KV-3000, so you might be able to get one. Last time I bought a new 820DB22 from Andrews, it was $1700. May still be available, and if you call on it, ask for the 8-xxx-xxx-xx number from the parts list, as they don't cross-reference the 820DB22. Or ask by model #CVM-3000.

Thanks for the tip. I found the number, it's 8-733-101-05 now, it would be interesting to see if the price has changed much...

Did a bit more research. PartStore.com shows available for $2,917 oouch! They can keep it for that price! Maybe cheaper to wait for another auction on eBay and grab a set for parts. Although given the rareness of the KV-3000, canibalizing one would break my heart. I also thought of leaving Hawk-Eye a message to see if a rebuilt is doable. Another option is finding a used working CVM-3000 ...now this might be the best way to go. Any one know the best places to look for these commercial monitors?

Did you try going directly to Sony? I bought a 19" tube from them way back, and I could tell they were anxious to deplete some of their inventory.

only to find that the part is discontinued, no longer available. I can try calling Sony tommorrow to see what else they can offer. Alternatively, I'm hoping HawkEye's rebuild fee is more reasonable than going down the path of finding another one, but it would be nice to get my hands on NOS/NIB tube. Still I'm open to any suggestions at this point ...even an old CVM-3000, although the cost of freight will probably run high... More ideas are welcome...

For more modern tubes like that there may be other rebuilders to contact, like Video Display Corp. They don't do vintage stuff anymore, from what I've read, but this is different.

I bet they may... The CVM-3000 was a very expensive monitor, and I have the feeling that plenty of them are still in use. I own one, but I haven't asked after it for 10 years, when I lent it to a friend of a friend. I'll see if I can track it down, but no promises. At least it's on the west coast, and the tube was OK last I saw it. Not 100%, but OK.

I am not aware that anyone ever rebuilt Sony Trinitrons. In the early 80's, the rebuilder my company used offered the first ten rebuilt Trinitrons free to anyone who could get new guns from Sony.

I got a reply from Scott Avitt at Hawkeye today, see below. No details as to the why but he made it clear that he wouldn't rebuild it. So maybe the gun isn't available. His price does seems a bit easier to chew, no guarantee it'll be any good to swallow. Hope he can look around and see what turns up ... stay tuned.

Sorry, but there are no rebuilds of that type of tube, As far as finding a new one I will see if there are any available, I will tell you in advance however that you are looking at over $400.00 for the tube plus shipping if it is available.

Video Display Corp has rebuilt those tubes in the past, and I believe the gun is the same as the 710AB22. Mom 'n' Pop rebuilders used to refuse Trinitron tubes because they were hard to build, and Sony didn't sell the guns for a long time. I've installed 100s of rebuilt Sony tubes, no problems beyond the usual slight difficulty getting good convergence (as with all rebuilt inline tubes).

From what I've heard/read, Sony was ALWAYS horsy about selling parts-especially if you weren't a dealer.

Sony wanted $18 for a pair of 4" square rubber belts for a tape deck! I didnt buy them.

Have you tested the emission on the tube?

I had a PVM-2530 with a bad "Ub" or RGB interface board that exhibited the same symptoms: peak white areas going negative, milky smear on details, seemingly at random. Since I had a parts monitor, I swapped the board and the problem disappeared.

Might not be related, but its a lot easier than sourcing a tube.

Good idea... Tom is a sharp tech, so he probably has verified the problem. But if not, he might read the G1 voltages on the CRT socket.
