Well I drug home another radio, I bought this guy for 50$. I know I know its an amputee, I thought it was a little low, then when I got it in the car I noticed the saw marks :cry: but at least it has 2 globe 45's. It is also missing a rosette in one of the knobs :cry: It was in the shop so the caps are missing, the tag on the back says it would cost 51$ a piece and it needed 3 :shock: amazing the price's back then. I was shocked to see the original instructions and schemtics wedged in the back :D. So what do you guys have to say about it?? I am also wondering if any of you out there might have an empty or trashed cabinet that I can get the legs off of?? I haven't researched it all and kind of jumped the gun on purchasing it :cry:

That's a nice looking radio even with the legs sawed down. I've always thought the late 20s - early 30s consoles were the best looking of radios.

I love the look of that Console! The early 30s were the Golden Age of radio, werent they?..................

So the high boy turned into a low boy? Still, a very nice radio to do something with!

Even though it has been hacked, I am glad you saved it. The rest is in great shape and can be made really nice. Maybe you can find a picture of what the lower part of the legs looks like, along with the supports that go in between the legs and get a furniture repair shop or something like that to replicate them for you.

That's a triple-chassis beast, reminds me of my Majestic 90. I'd say 1928-29 if I had to guess.

Put an automatic search on ebay for that model, you might find an empty cabinet being auctioned. It happens quite often.

nice coffin, looks saveable to me! if you cant get the legs you can always prop it up on a pair of wooden lp record crates stained a dark color. i dont think most folks would notice its hiding short legs..

if those 45's are good you already got your money back.

Nice Zenith! Early model console which isn't common. Nice condition and mostly there except for the little bit of legs. Worth restoring to full Zenith glory. Nice styling! A fine score for the ages! :tresbon:

Hacking down furniture was commonplace in the '50s if Popular Mechanics and similar magazines of the time are any indication. In those days it would seem that a lower-slung look was a more sleek and modern look, and was much sought. Study consoles from the '50s and '60s and you'll see the trend.

The legs on your Zenith are likely cut just above where the legs were cross-braced by an "H" frame sort of thing, with about the same length of leg extending below as what now remains.

Perusal of antique radio pages might offer up images of radios of that style to offer a guide to reconstruction of the missing parts.

another one of my rare fines, I found a sketch of one with the H brace, i believe it was from an advertisement. I haven't been able to find anyone with another one to give me detailed photos of what it looked like so it could be recreated. I have the luck of finding unusual objects. I am looking at a gilligan's island radio that I bought identical to the one on the show but it is an awia and has a chrome handle. I also just picked up a coral recording of the blue jays on a 78rpm record, no one has heard of it.
