got me a FREE zenith console
 

got a call today from a buddy that said someone had an old radio they wanted to get rid of pronto. it was headed for the garbage pile! can you believe that crap?!?!? luck had it the call came through right when i was leaving work and the radio was on my way home!

i got it home and its a zenith console with shortwave and still has the cardboard box rotating antenna in it, radio seems all there. the pushbuttons came loose and its got termites. i think its saveable so im tenting it. literally.

i put it in a tent and im gassing it with a couple of raid dry foggers. one fogger tonight, another in the morning. hopefully that will kill the termites and i can get to working on the radio!

the old timer that lived there was an electronic tech for eastern airlines. the lady said the garage is full of crap and they are gonna call me when they get ready to clean it out. double score!

Nice score! How much damage did the termites do? Anything to noticeable?

the termites have softenend the wood in a few places. you can feel its hollowed out. not much can be done i guess. i think its strong enough to save it.

Looks like about a 1941 model...any numbers stamped on the back of the chassis? How many tubes?

If you have soft wood but damage isnt visible from outside, you can take a hyperdermic needle filled with elmers glue and inject it into the holes from the back side. If damage is on any of the sides, place it on that side when filling and let it cure. This will let it flow into the wood instead of running back out of the holes. Once the glue cures it will be solid and strong. Since it dries almost clear it wont be too noticable. If the damage comes through the front side, fill those area's with wood filler tinted to the type wood you have first and let dry. Then inject the glue into the back side afterwards. With Elmers glue being water based, it will soak in and adhere nicely. Any excess or drippage can be cleaned up with a damp rag. I've done this in the past and it works quite well.
