Calling on Zenith Trans-Oceanic Gurus!
 

Hi,
I just bought my first Zenith TO. From the chassie number,6T40Z I put it as an Y600. I paid $35 at a flea market and its in "good" condition. The insides look better than the outside. It cleaned up fairly well nothing missing but a battery and a manual! What battery do these take? I can see a lead and a round clip to hold a battery. Where can I get one? Any info you guys have on these would be helpful. Thanks! Oh, I see no model number on this radio?

The batteries for this thing have been unavailable, or as near as to make no difference, for decades now. Does yours not have a plug ? I WOULD NOT plug it in, & "fire it up", however, until it was checked out by someone who specialises in tube radio repair.

You can find folks that sell plastic enclosures that you absolutely fill up with AA cells to run your T-O, or you can "roll your own". I made one from a sheet of Masonite pegboard that fit in the bottom of the cabinet, with ten 9V battery holders glued down to it and connected in series, and another battery holder that holds six C-cells. I haven't installed it yet, but I have room for a D-cell holder for the dial lamp. I got lucky and found a plug that mates with the battery cable socket, before I was just using alligator clips for testing. Now I have to get the radio tuned up...
