Grundig-Majestic 2035
 

Hello everyone,

I am new here. I picked up a 2035 and the exterior looks pretty good for a 50 some odd yr old radio but hence, it doesnt work. I can power it up, the tubes glow, the tuner moves, the keys click but nothing, no sound, just some very low, almost inaudible static other than that, nada.


I have tried to email a few sites who advertise repair work but 2 weeks, no response. Does anyone have any ideas or at the least, know of any reputable repair places I can take it? TIA J.R.

For someone to tell you where to take it, we need to know where you live. By "take it" I assume you mean to haul it there in person. It would be expensive to ship both directions. Maybe there is someone local to you that would test the tubes for you. Its not like the "good ol' days" when you could walk down to the local drug store and test your tubes.

I have a Grundig Majestic 7018 I am just starting in on. They are great radios. How about posting a pic or 2 of it? Good luck.

A few things you can try. In many cases, the tubes are still all OK. With the set off, get some CRC electronic cleaner at an auto parts store. Take out a tube, squirt a little on tube pins, then plug in and out of the socket several times. Do all the tubes one by one so you're sure to get them back in the correct sockets (are they in the correct sockets now??) If the set doesn't work after that, stop at this point. Even if it does work, don't play it except for a minute but see next paragraph.

It's not a good idea to leave an old set on until it has been gone over and certain inexpensive parts (capacitors) replaced which can suddenly short after fifty years and take out some virtually irreplaceable parts. As Ticntoc said, need to know your location.

I am in Western North Carolina near upstate South Carolina about 3 hours north of Atlanta and an hour south of Asheville.

Usually it's not the tubes that are bad in these radios. Most likely some capacitors. You really need to know what you're doing when fixing these radios. Not only that, but they are tempermental. Also it's hard to find schematic diagrams.

If you send it somewhere it will probably cost more then the radio is worth.
