Setchel Carlson Barrel TV

Nobody pays much attention to these Setchel Carlson barrel portables of the late 1950s; so they can be obtained for about nothing. But they are in their own league when compared to their contemporary barrels. All theSetchels had power transformers, 3 transformer coupled IFs, no PCBS, and most importantly to collectors, they had all-aluminum sheet metal...chasis and the three main parts of the cabinet. This particular set is a 1960 model P66. Probably the earlier model P61 of 1956 is a little more interesting; it had something that looked like a Standard Coil tuner, a 5U4 instead of Si diodes, and a 90 degree tube instead of the 110 degree tube of the later set. Vertical linearity was better on the earlier set, at least as far as I have seen.

I have a couple of those sets. They are really well built and perform well! Easy to work on too since they are modular.

The 62 has a weak CRT :( but the 58 has a NOS rebuilt:)

As you noted the 58 uses a large neck 90º tube while the 62 has a small neck 110º tube.
