I know nothing of old televisions. There is one locally and I've always wanted and older TV

I'm just curious as to whether or not this a fairly generic model (for parts), I see a bit of black "mist?" on the front of the TV, is this anything?

I have emailed the owner about a model number (and size) with nothing yet, but he is open to offers (heck, 50 CDN sound spretty good)

I don't mind investing a few bucks into something like this but I worry about "unobtanium" parts. I realize I'd be buying this "as is" but any insight is welcome.

Is there anything else I should consider. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated :thmbsp:

As DuMonts go that one is pretty generic. Looks like an early - mid 50's 21" model, as long as the CRT is good it should be fixable.
The mist is probably Tar from Cigs, very common on sets from that era.

$50 is a reasonable price if everything's there and in decent shape, well $50 American, I'm not sure what the exchange rate is now? :)

That's the first Du Mont that I have seen in Canada in my 15 years of collecting tube electronics. All I have seen in my area are Admirals and entry level RCA Victors. If you like it, grab it. They certainly aren't making any more of them!

i don't know how you guys do it. I just picked it up (30 bucks). Holy crap is it ever big and heavy. He emailed me the dimensions but was off by as few inches and he said it wasn't very heavy, took 2 of us to load it in to the car.

It came with a picture brightner?, tube layout sheet, and an operators manual, but its' for a Rogers Majestic?, is it the wrong manual? there are no pictures in the manual for reference?

and finally, will cold affect it in any way (I have it outside in the shed for now, which also means no pictures for now)

The brightner is bad news, it means the CRT is likely to be weak, on the bright side 21" tubes aren't impossible to find.

well that's not good, is the brightner maybe just an accessory that may have come with the TV?

Oh well guess we'll see in the spring when I can bring it out and go through it.

Cold won't bother it, just keep it dry. Brighteners were aftermarket add-ons. Not every set that has one really needed them, so maybe you will luck out.

Those are fairly common tubes; you can probably find a good used or NOS crt for not too much money, though shipping can be a problem.

I had a later model DuMont something like this and it was built rather simply. Probably not too hard to work on.

Was the brightener attached to the picture tube or just included with the set?

If the seller just threw it in then maybe you're in luck! :yes:

I have a 21" Dumont crt that has been in storage at my parents house (in my old room) since the early 1980's. I wish I could remember the #. I do know its a 21?P4A.
