Advice on shipping old tv console long distance needed
 

Hello everone,
I am or will need some advice on getting an old B&W console across
the country and figure this is the right place to get some opinions on this subject. This set would have to be picked up , then either shipped to me or some terminal where I could pick it up. I have not done this before but hope someone has had some expierence with a shipper to pick up and safely handle this type of work. I realize that it will not be cheap, but hoping there is some economical way to do this?

If you don't require cheap then Craters & Freighters is one option, first class velvet glove treatment but it's expensive.

U-Ship might be another possibility, You place an ad saying what you need done and wait for offers, you're dealing with individual Truckers there so it's luck of the draw how careful they are.

I've had good luck with Craters and Freighters. But, for a fraction of the cost, I've also had good luck with North American Van Line blanket wrap service. I used them for an RCA TRK 12 and an Andrea tabletop set. They pick up the TV at the origin location, wrap it in moving blankets, load it into a truck, and deliver the set to my location and bring it into the house. Coast to coast takes less than a week and I can track the progress online. I've been pleased.

I have been very pleased with Craters & Freighters. They pick up, build a custom crate (or in my case, two crates), and ship without damage door to door.

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. I guess it depends on what the set is worth to you. Having received a couple of smashed TVs that were shipped to me by other companies, I'm not inclined to skimp any more.

I used www.vintagetransport.com for a combination console that weighed about 150 pounds. I was very happy with their service and price.

I also have had success with Craters and Freighters. I had a color console shipped to me in California from Massachusetts. They built a custom box and packed the set very well. I have also used Old Dominion Freight Lines. Another large color set was shipped to me by them. In this case though, the shipper has to crate and pack the set, Old Dominion is just the carrier. There are some good options available to you. Best of luck.

I recently got a tip from a friend who is a dealer in heavy gym machinery. He showed me this site: http://www.uship.com/find . Kind of like a Craigslist of shipping. It's private people and professional truckers who post here to take on extra stuff on trips already planned. I've never personally used anyone from it, so caveat emptor. But my friend swears by it, and hasn't had any losses or problems.

I am NOT happy with craters and freighters. I have used them several times but the last time, I got a quote from C&F in Little Rock I think, it was for a GE untravision set just like my Grandparents owned on ebay. I bid and won the item. Then after much begging I could not get C&F to pick up the item. The seller was getting very upset which i understand. I had to get someone from uship to deliver it at the last minute. This was quite frustrating experience with that C&F office!

Uship is great. I recently had an old ctc4 shipped up from Merridan Ms, to MIlwaukee.

The fellow who had the set wrapped the set in 2 layers of bubble wrap and then 2 layers of cardboard. The he strapped it to a standard 42 by 48 wood shipping pallet and took photos of it.

I posted my shipping requirements on u-ship and within a day or two I had a quote for $179.

Craters and Freighters is very good but woul have charged over $500 to ship it the same distance.

If you can have the shipper wrap it and strap it to a pallet, you can save a lot of money by shipping it as palletized freight. below is a link to the listing.
