i see and hear that all the time.they watch antique roadshow and think they just found the worlds rarest item.i once got a call about a coke machine from the 60s.nice unit,didn t work.just needs freon.owner wanted 5000.00.nice looking piece but 5000.00?she sent me a series of e mails after i declined.her friend,(who is a realtor)told her that it is a rare and unusual item.i always want my realtor to price my antiques.the price dropped several times and i think she finally sold it for 75.00.btw,freon is expensive.that unit would have cost somewhere in the 2-300.00 range to have filled.if there was a leak or a compressor?more money than it is worth.stromberg carleson is a top of line item but that price? 50.00 max!!!!!

I usually look at the Atlanta CL before making a trip to see my mother. Seems like every time I do I see c.1980 rent-a-center console stereos and TVs for $500-$2000. I could be rich if I lived there! :bigok:

Since this is a local ad for me, I emailed this person and said, "Either this ad is a joke or the joke is on you. These seldom ever break the $75-100 zone". Guess what? They didn't email me back to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about! I'm very sure that the email I sent them was the only one they received or ever will get for this item.

I checked on this ad again and it has been "deleted by its' author". Even a farthead would know that these are not worth that kind of money.

happened to be browsing the site and this prompted a thought or two. it seems that people(real estate operators seem to be heavily represented in this group) are just over the top into greed nowadays. the big discovery appears to be that somewhere there is someone who will pay any price for anything if you can just find him or her. 'antiques' are now anything over 15 years old(which may be somewhat valid in that you can't get replacement parts for anything over 5 yrs. old). i have been checking out vehicles lately, and i have seen new pickups selling for less than similar used vehicles as much as 3-4 yrs. old. crazy, but that's a classic symptom of greed. it'd be amusing if it weren't that it's all about how phony things have become

The ad was pulled and I doubt they sold it.

I once saw a 3 year old Mazda P/U truck priced at $5500 at a small used car dealer. New one was $5195 delivered from new car dealer. Thought I'd rattle some chains there and did! I asked the used car dealer what was the deal? He asked what I would offer for it and I told him I'm on the way to buy the new one!

My grandfather bought his last new truck in '96, an F150. He paid $18,500, cash. He passed away a year later after putting 7,500 miles on it. I took it to the car dealer he bought it from to see what we could get. While the sales manager was test driving it I spotted the identical truck, used with 20,000 miles, priced at $18,500! When the manager got back he said he'd give me $10,500 for it. Sure you will. I learned a lot that day!

In the mid 90's I noticed a '70 T-Bird for $3500 on the used lot of the local Saturn dealer. Had to pull in and check it out. It was obviously garaged, salesman said the grandson inherited the car and traded it in on a new Saturn, story was believable, the car even had the sticker from Canal Ford on the bumper.

I ask them how much they would give me for my Lincoln Mark V if I traded it in, they drove it and told me $500. I don't think so, but let's drive the T-Bird. It CATCHES FIRE before we get out the lot! The fuel line at the carb was so dry rotted it was spraying gas everywhere.

The porters attempts to extinguish the fire came straight from an episode of Amos & Andy. One guy running with a bucket of soap water trips and spills it all on the other porter, who stops and sprays him with the fire extinguisher, all while the salesman is trying to beat the flames out with his sportcoat.

That would have been completely hilarious...if the poor car hadn't been burning the whole time! :sigh: Hope the fire got put out quickly enough to prevent serious damage.

It was pretty funny, if only because the salesman had built the car up so much in his pitch. I knew exactly what I was looking at but kept my mouth shut. There wasn't much damage beyond a few wires, some hood insulation and the salesman's pride. BTW, that was the last time I ever test drove a car without raising the hood first.
